I agree with your comments here, Rob. It's presumptuous for all these armchair detectives to mock the Chief and belittle his work on this case, given how little we know. We probably are being told all we need to know at this point, given the usual circumspection required by law enforcement trying to find a hidden killer. Your comment about the possibility there may be a "really nasty bad threat" is exactly what I am thinking, especially IF the killer is an Islamic terrorist. For all we know, the threat may be of a large bomb or team of assassins waiting to take this thing to the next level. Maybe there aren't even any demands being made--just taunting threats for gamesmanship.
I think we need to recognize that whoever the killers are, they have managed to pull off several murders without leaving a trace of evidence, except "clues" and messages they chose to leave. It may be an overstatement to say the killers are highly sophisticated in their methods, but they at least have been smart enough so far not to get caught. That demonstration so far of at least above-average intelligence would have any police chief worried. And having shown some prowess in getting to this point, if the killers are warning the authorities of attacks on a larger scale, the police have to be sh***ng bricks.
Interesting hypothetical question: Just HOW BIG would such a larger threat have to be before the police could no longer justify not disclosing it? IF the shooters are threatening to shoot more people, the police might not feel compelled to reveal that information, as that is a threat obvious to all. If the killers said, "we have a dirty nuke and we will kill hundreds of thousands," I would presume the authorities would feel obligated to announce that (and the lines would form on the freeways within minutes). But there is a lot in between those extremes of risk.

All Moose has to do enlist Billy Graham and the evangelist will help him find God!

Not Billy Graham, Oral Roberts! After all, God threatened to call Oral home if he didn't raise enough money...

I think that your take on this is fairly accurite. Imagine if the "threat" is, "the vidio tape you all found in afghanistan is exactly what is the next step". That is random snipings at golf courses, RPG's into police cars ,etc.

The police, FBI, and all the other alphabet agencies are not having warm fuzzy feelings.

But no matter who is responsible for this, the insistence of maintaining silence about information which is already obvious is becoming obsurd and making the investigation appear inept - even if it is not. The only person(s) not confused in this investigation is the shooter.

Perfectly stated. A good example is taking several days to release a composite picture of a white Astrovan. One of my coworkers made the analogy that it was like releasing a composite of a baseball. We all know what one looks like so what is the point of making a huge deal about a composite to be released later? Then add in the comments form the "experts" (I don't recall who was responsible) telling everyone to walk in zig-zag patterns and duck between your vehicles and the pumps while filling up our tanks. Frankly, I find it a bit insulting and it does make me concerned that the investigation is not being handled in the best fashion.

How is it that no matter where these shootings take place, Moose is the one in front of the camera speaking on behalf of all jurisdictions. >>>>>>>

I'm beginning to think "the shooter" has said he only
wants to deal with Moose.......

Moose has looked very rehearsed & uncomfortable @ the 3
"coded message" press conf.'s

Your example of the composite of the van is another perfect example.

In contrast, did you see the frank and professional comunication we recieved from the police in Ashland? That Chief and the spokesman answered all the questions they could and then politely declined to discuss the rest.

They had a lot to say, and nothing they said was anything other than what the killer already knew - in other words, they managed to communicate well with the rest of us and still not compromise the investigation.

The next day we were back to Maryland and again even the obvious or most mundane details was information not to be released. I do not think this is an unfair criticism - I think it is a factual observation.

I think this is because the sniper's communications have been addressed to Moose, either directly or indirectly>>>.

My thoughts exactly.....you can look @ Moose & tell
he doesn't enjoy sending these coded messages.....

I think "the shooter" has stated he will only "talk"
with moose....

Nice try! You and Rob are dead wrong. Chieh Moose is in this bad situation because of his first bad decision, not to use a PIO to deal with the press. Once it was apparent they were dealing with a spree killer any information they withhold from the public takes away thier ability to freely make informed decisions about thier safety and the saftey of thier loved ones.

Interesting hypothetical question: Just HOW BIG would such a larger threat have to be before the police could no longer justify not disclosing it?

Well I guess if you live and work here in the center of this mess as I do you might think we've passed that threshold already, the fourth and fifth victims were killed within a half mile of my parents house.

Final note: If Moose was the right man for the job, he wouldn't have allowed his ego to get him in over his head.

"...but NBC news said that they are holding back information at the request of investigators...but that they now have information that we are entering a new and dangerous phase of this whole game."

Heard it on tonight's NBC network report.

Does that explain the decision to close area schools?

Denzel will play the Moose in the movie about the Sniper Task Force"

I was thinking O.J. Simpson. He did play Det. Nordberg in "The Naked Gun."
