I don't see the process of projection as being quite as direct, or simple, as Shaffer does ... but the parallels he points out nonetheless haunt me. And they have been part of my unease at a lack of focus -- and the ready seizing upon excuses for broader aims -- that have characterized political culture since Nine Eleven.

Is there any fundamental distinction to be drawn between George W. Bush and the "sniper" who has been emulating the president's style in the suburbs of Washington? Why are so many of us terrified by the handful of killings perpetrated by the sniper, yet embrace the wholesale butcheries of President Bush? You're posting this crap on the wrong forum.

Once that war ended, the Soviet Union became the designated enemy for the same reason: it wanted to "take over the world." An inability to distinguish between the merits United States and those of the Soviet Union betrays, I believe, a deep-seated hatred of America, especially when governed by Republicans, on the part of the author. A concomitant embarrassment at being a citizen accompanied by an unwillingness and fear of repatriation to a more harmonious regime elsewhere in the world - Cuba, North Korea - have produced the anger of impotence in the clueless person who penned this piece. He projects his anger against that which he cannot fathom: the goodness of America.
I believe one of the stated goals of communism was/is world dominion. That has never been the position of the United States in either policy or practice, although it may be the world's desire as much of its population tries to cram itself within out borders.

Psycho-babble.
I'm always amazed at how weak-minded sheep clutch at such nonsense as this.

I tend to go along with you on this one, thanks for posting it. It may take a little more protection than asbestos underwear today.

The author of this article does bring up a lot of valid, logical and rational points. He does expose the hypocrisy and post 9/11 hysteria that seems to grip certain of those who currently control U.S. foreign policy.
