My sixth grader is reading Tolkien's translation of Sir Gawain. A high school honors English class should be comfortable with Beowulf, Caterbury Tales, and Sir Gawain in the original dialect, and they ought to be (but generally aren't these days) getting to know some Latin as well. Modern standards for schools suck, vide Dr. Moose (yeah, he's got a Ph.D.).

I agree, though I would say that they should be reading the Canterbury Tales in Middle English rather than all of Sir Gawain in it, simply because Chaucer's London dialect is more closely related to modern English than is the Pearl poet's. They've already done Beowulf (God, I love that poem!), and Canterbury Tales is next. At the end of the year, if we have the time, I'll let them read The Hobbit as a reward, though they'll have to discuss it in the context of Tolkien's response to the idea of hero expressed in Beowulf. Though I wouldn't want to dumb down the curriculum... </sarcasm>

Because I only teach 120 kids a year.

In other words, "I love me."
Ohhhh c'mon. You're a public school teacher. A taxpayer leech. You get a government welfare check. You're just a public servant. Get over yourself.

"If I had to translate that into German, especially given the apparent obsequious effect desired, I would translate: "Herr Wachtmeister (or "lieber Herr Wachtmeister"), ich bin der Herr Gott (perhaps "ich bin Gott")." "Polizist" may be the word for a policeman, but that's not how you address him. "Herr Wachtmeister" is like "Officer" in English. Nobody addresses a policeman as "Policeman" in English either. "

I wonder how a policeman is addressed in the Middle East ? Maybe neither German or English is the native tongue of the shooter. We know for a fact that Germany is one of the countries with large and active terrorists cell.

BTW, what happens Tuesday? If we don't catch him tomorrow, do we keep the schools out indefinately? How long do we keep them closed?

Hopefully the parents will seriously look into home education for their children.

Either home education or, (gasp) no education would be better than the PC crap being taught in public schools today.

anything is possible here

Yes, but somethings are much more likely. BL said he will bring the war to our streets, I think this is the start.

I don't agree with that at all. The German concept of providing Bildung, general education, seems to me to make a lot more sense. Maybe the recipients of such education will not advance as far as people who receive a more utilitarian education. But so what? The most prestigious jobs are really pretty empty, and the people I see who have them are, for the most part, pretty unfulfilled.

Get a decent education, get a decent job that gives you an adequate living and is reasonably useful to the society, and I think that's enough. A real education will certainly help you to raise properly any children that you may have.

But, their mom probably doesn't read Beowulf in the original Old English, either...

This homeschooling mom does.

Now I can see why you're so defensive.

Yes. I cannot tolerate abuse or misuse of the young or the elderly. I have a big heart for them. I feel so sorry for kids trapped in the public school system. They're like little lost souls. I support school choice 100%. No one should lose out. It's so sad.

...that the .223 bullet in question...

Sorry, I missed the first part of y'alls conversation, and only saw the post I responded to when I jumped. I'll be more careful next time. I've skipped a lot of posts trying to catch up.

Thats true, we're fortunate to have this forum which is truly up to the minute with details. Not everyone has this option, their left to fill in the blanks from whatever source available.Maybe I'm expecting to much in this day and age for clear, accurate, frequent, updates without the quirks of moose. The police are not the ones being shot at here, they are public servants, provide the information.Last night the Hanover Police were impressive, half hour updates, polite, professional acting.

I'd be real nervous if I lived in Salisbury, MD.

Why do you keep warning people of being afraid of the next attack to be in MD??

Do you know something we don't know...??

This is the second thread you've posted something to this effect.

You described what you are teaching as honors English.

When I graduated from HS in 1965, all students were taught that which you have described as normal coursework; not as honors or AP.

With over 700 responses on this thread as I post, you may miss this. But it's important: WITH A STORY THIS CRITICAL, PLEASE BE ACCURATE. You never know who is reading these threads. Chief Moose most assuredly DID NOT ASK THE SNIPER to call. We do not know who left the message. It could be:

  • a hoax,
  • a scared witness,
  • an accomplice who wants out,
  • someone, not an accomplice, who either thinks they know or does know the shooter, or
  • the shooter himself.

Other than the fact that it contained a phone number (pay or other neutral phone) the police could monitor and the person who left the message could use to talk to them, we don't know anything more about the message. The media may screw up facts, but we on FR should try to get it right

I don't know if it's been speculated already, but is it possible the sniper left a cell phone at the scene with a note saying he would contact police on that phone?
