I think so too. According to Tuchman on CNN last night, the sniper could also have been standing out in the woods, out of his van, just like the child's shooting in MD. Tuchman also said that just about an acre through the woods (about a 45-second hike) was a road under construction that led to Route 54 (it didn't connect, but a vehicle could easily pass over the unconstructed part). I just looked on a map and saw that Route 54 leads to Route 301. The Bowie shooting was just off Route 301.

This does not bode well for the kids that will be playing outside in those counties tomorrow.

Kids are not and have not been playing outside for some time. I talked to a grandmother yesterday whose grandchildren live in Fairfax County. All outside activities have been cancelled and parents get their children into the house quickly after school. Children and parents are getting signficant cabin fever!

You might be relieved to know that there are some excellent teachers in the public schools. I'm not crazy about public schools, either, and that's the reason I've returned to school to get my certification to teach. I had to sit in on public school classes and was pleasantly surprised at how good some of the teachers were--better than some of them at my daughter's private Christian school. However, that is not true across the board and there were lots of things I saw that I did not like. Just stay involved and listen to your child about his/her classes. If possible, visit the classroom. Even volunteer, although that is not possible for a lot of parents, I realize. There are bright spots!

Absolutely LOL. Here are a few lines from Beowulf in the original dialect. Perhaps you meant they should be comfortable with a Modern English translation, as I'm not sure what high schools are teaching Old English these days.

Read it out loud, you'll be suprised how much you understand. It comes out kind of like the Swedish Chef, or that bad fake German they have in war movies.

Of the three, Beowulf is the toughest going, although about 100 words will do for reasonable comprehension. Sir Gawain is a bit easier. Most editions in Middle English are extensively footnoted so you can get a jump-start just looking up the unfamiliar characters, words, and pronouciation as you go. It's only a little harder than making out what Joel Chandler Harris's African Jack is saying in the Brer Rabbit stories.

While Tolkien's translation of Sir Gawain is a masterpiece in its own way, it also illustrates why you want to read the original: Tolkien imposes sensible interpretation where there sometimes is no sense in the original - where words are used just because they are pretty. These works were not written with literary critics in mind, and quality was measured differently. That's part of what reading them is supposed to convey.

To all of the geniuses here trashing Moose and his cryptic message you show your lack of maturity. If anyone stops to analyze what he said it isn't at all mysterious. Chief Moose wants to establish contact with either the shooter or the witness; whoever left the message. Moose's statement was obviously discussed over and over in the headquarters and it was deemed highly desirable to go about it in this fashion. Let's hope it turns up something. And all of the children who have posted here should go to bed. You have kindergarten tomorrow morning.

As to the crime itself, I believe when this is solved, hopefully sooner than later, is that the shooter is involved in a "game" where only one shot is allowed for the kill. If you check around on the internet you can find games and "scores" of "kills" and other sniper related web sites.

This sniper believes he is supremely intelligent and have outsmarted the best of law enforcement. This one shot and leave is part of his trademark. He would not be "honorable" if he took more than one shot.

Yes, it was apparent to me from the first that the message was worded appropriately so that whoever left the message (now known to be a written message left in the woods by the sniper), would know from Chief Moose's words that he was acknowledging the Sniper's note and that he was responding to his specific request in the note.
