Well, I guess I'm out of touch and I don't see kids hanging around the local ice cream place but there isn't much crime here. So maybe this is what kids do now -- sounds like boredom.

I very strongly disagree. This is one very extremely isolated extreme incident and is in absolutely no way characteristic of youth today. Yes there are also a lot of messed up kids, just as there has been over so many years. Please don't indict the whole of society over something like this.
