DNC to Help McBride's Get-Out-the-Vote Bid in Fla.
By Dan Balz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, October 20, 2002; Page A05
Democratic Party officials have decided to rush additional staff and resources to Florida to bolster the campaign of gubernatorial candidate Bill McBride after an on-the-ground assessment found the challenger's get-out-the-vote operation badly in need of assistance.
...Democratic National Committee Chairman Terence McAuliffe has authorized at least another half million dollars in direct assistance to the Florida campaign. DNC officials have asked Nick Baldick, who ran Florida for Al Gore during the 2000 presidential campaign, to return to the state for the duration to help put the operation into shape...
A senior Democratic Party official said the party plans to mount "a presidential level" voter mobilization program between now and Nov. 5
Another strategist said, "
I think we can fix this."

ELECTION 2002 Bush ups ante with tax attack on rival
By Mark Silva | Sentinel Political Editor

TALLAHASSEE -- The governor's race is going nuclear, with Gov. Jeb Bush launching a TV ad warning that Democratic rival Bill McBride's promises add up to a pile of new taxes -- maybe even the biggest taboo of all, a state income tax....

Thanks for posting this, summer. I hope lots of people go down to Florida from around the country!

This reminds me of the effort Bush made to win California in 2000. Let the Dems spend their capital on a symbolic win. Every dollar spent in Florida is one less for Carnahan or Johnson. Bush isn't going to lose Florida.

I think I heard that the DNC, MacAuliffe, and some of Willie's friends are even taking their cigarette boats out of drug transport service between Cuba and Miami for a couple of days to transport voters in from Jamaica and Haiti. The Haitians were a little unhappy because they are paid less per vote than the lighter skined Jamaicans and threatened to go to the Florida Supreme Court. It all got worked out, the Haitians receive less on votes 1 through 5 but for each vote from 6 on up, the dems will pay them both the same.
I wonder what the geezers in Broward county will do to amuse us this time.

Aww! You stole my thunder!
Got to watch Dems in any close race. Here in WI in 2000 we had people bussed in from out of state, homless people bribed with smokes for their votes, college students voting multiple times. Guess what, AG Doyle, now running for Gov didn't thing this worthy of an investigation. Gee, any guess what party he is?

Have either of you seen any major media follow-up to:
1)
The illegal McBride-FEA campaign ads?2)
McBride's "dubious" silence re. "Rev." Curry's Bush attack?3)The 18 missing voting machines in Broward (those hard drives had better not be counted on election day!)?
The DNC, through its army of lawyers, solicits "any and all" complaints having to do with the election.
Our voice wasn't heard in 2000. Going to the mainstream press didn't help. We need to keep track of "any and all" complaints this year...including Ms. Oliphant's behavior in Broward during the primaries, McAuliffe's promise to flood the polling places with DNC lawyers, every press story that calls McBride opinion "news" (that should fill an encyclopedia).
Every "outrage" we see in the newsmedia daily needs to be catalogued and archived, because if we find it offensive, it is far more newsworthy and reliable than a paranoid voter's fantasy that a police car parked far from a voting place was part of a Bush scheme to prevent minorities from voting. That "complaint" made the international news, Mary Frances Berry's report for the Congressional Record and will go down in history as an example of Republican "racism"...unless we can take back our public air waves, our schools, our elections, our country.

They forgot to note that the money had to be in small denomination, unmarked bills, so that they can buy votes.

A McBride win means more to Democrats than just an ordinary garden variety gubernatorial victory.
Democrats would spin a McBride win into national repudiation of the Bush administration and its policies.
This signals to me that the McAuliffe/Clinton machine might be expecting to lose the Senate and are looking ahead to capitalize on whatever political symbolism they can gain to use against Bush in 2004.
It's also interesting that despite the DNC's attempts to turn voter anger over the FL 2000 debacle into a Jeb Bush defeat did not and are not working. Shows how quickly voters forget. Their base is not yet energized in Florida.
We're seeing signs of that everywhere. Once the Iraq Resolution was passed, Democrat leaders were out on the stump with a message that could only appeal to the far left base. They don't have their base wrapped up yet and the election is 2 weeks away!

I have seen only the Carl Cameron report on Fox re: Curry's comments. I posted here and have seen nothing since.
I've seen no follow-up to the other 2 items.
An item that might be of concern that I'd like to pass on to you is that, as of October 18, Hillsborough County has gotten over twenty-five thousand (25,000) requests for absentee ballots. That is DIRECT from SOE and the number deviates from the norm to the degree that it was mentioned in addressing poll workers.
The absentee votes cast in 2000 aren't segregated from the totals, but the total number of votes for all presidential candidates was 359,162 in Hillsborough. You and others might want to check your counties to see if the same thing is happening. The increase could be attributed to the length and number of amendments and the RPOF calls encouraging absentee voting OR could be a South Dakota thing.
I'll keep my eyes open regarding the media follow-up and will let you know if anything turns up.
To: windchime
Thanks for the heads up on the absentee ballots, windchime. We need to be vigilant as far as is possible. Keep a detailed log of "any and all concerns" re. election 2002.
