I don't doubt that. I just don't see where the card would be of any benefit to Al Queda. I think if it turns out that the perp is a middle easterner with an Islamist motive, then he is working solo or maybe a small unaffiliated group that organized on it's own here in the US and made it's own rules, not a trained in Afghanistan crew.

You are correct, the ME's are very superstitious folks. Believe me they can justify anything including "I Am God". It is ONLY lying to the infidels to accomplish jihad (not a major sin).

You'll really need to think out of the box on this one even if it makes no sense to you. You gotta think like them and look into their beliefs.
