Red-Faced Microsoft Pulls Controversial Ad Spot Featured PR Agency Employee
POSTED: 9:28 p.m. EDT October 14, 2002
WASHINGTON -- Red-faced Microsoft executives have pulled an ad that purports to show a free-lance writer who switched to Windows from rival Macintosh.
There were questions about whether the woman actually existed.
It turns out she works at a public relations company hired by Microsoft. The Associated Press tracked her down by examining personal data hidden within documents that Microsoft published with its ad.
She says, "It was me. I made the switch."
Microsoft's ad was apparently a response to a national campaign by Apple that features names, photographs and testimonials from people who began using Macintosh technology because they were frustrated with Windows.
You have no idea who you're talking to, or what you're talking about. You might be better off reviewing Apple's own release notes to developers on the product before mouthing off. I've been a Mac developer since 1984. I've been working with UNIX since version 6. I was the lead computer scientist on a port of mach to 2 SuperComputers. I've made my living programming for the Mac. I'm an ex-NASA engineer
The problems I've experienced are known. They're reproducible, and the people at Apple handling these issues are incompetent. Case in point. I cannot install Jaguar server on several of my systems that are listed on the supported systems list from Apple. These systems have been running previous revs of the OS with no problems. I didn't make the computers, Apple did. They are 100% Apple, and they know it. And they best they can do is ask me if I have 3rd party disk or memory in them. Or -- better yet, they have me launch "console.app" from the system that isn't installed yet (because the OS won't install) so that I can turn own crash reporting. They are morons. Since they make the hardware and the OS there is absolutely no excuse for this kind of incompatibility. I'm not the only developer having these problems. You obviously haven't been to MacinTouch recently.
The simple fact -- of one statement you made -- ie, graphics drawing is consistent across platforms -- ROTFLMAO --- Any developer knows that the drawing engine for a Blue & white G3 is different from that of the latest G4. very simple graphical tests show significant differences from the way graphics are displayed on screen. Mac OS X 10.2 could very easily be the death of Apple. Their Quality Control on this one was non-existent. They pushed it out the door early, not because it was ready but because they wanted to ship new hardware that required it. Until Apple fans hold Apple accountable for this kind of sloppiness, you get what you deserve.
I have an independent mind. I don't drink kool-aid. Find a different thread to drink yours.
Boy, you are green! I'm talking about the ones that ARN'T patched yet ... like someone getting access to your /root volume. ... the fun new ones that are fresh and new in 10.2 coming straight to you ....
I'm taking about the BIG security flaws that any serious proigrammer worth his salt would have found in half an hour that are there .. the ones with a BIG NEON sign that are pointed right to your computer ....
But hey, you've got your security patches and you fell better. Isn't that special?
