Alexandria is actually in Arlington County. But yeah, Arlington definitely has its own police force. Kingstowne, which is sometimes considered a part of Alexandria, is in Fairfax County. Tell your folks to stay safe. It's nerve-wracking, I know. I'm sorry. : (

Sorry to disagree, poppyseed. Alexandria is an independent city. It is in no county at all.

Kingstowne is in Fairfax County, an immense county, and the shooting took place in a location far away but still in Fairfax County. Kingstowne may, however, have an Alexandria postal address--still it is Fairfax County. Much of Fairfax County has addresses of different postal areas which, like this one, can be a separate entity.

Arlington is a county but so populated that it is rather treated as a whole (or like a city).

Actually, per the Arlington County website, Alexandria is not part of Arlington County -- the two parted ways in 1870. But I don't see anything on the Alexandria or Fairfax Co. websites to indicate that Alexandria is part of Fairfax either -- I think it may not be part of any county. I grew up in Arlington and always had it in my head that Alexandria was part of Fairfax.
