No Surprises from (Massachusetts) Hawks and Doves.

No surprises from hacks and doves

Sunday, October 13, 2002

It was amazing - four of the 12 members of the Massachusetts congressional

delegation voted with President Bush on the Iraq military resolution.

The fact is that our guys are lightweights. On windy days they carry rolls of dimes in their pockets to keep from blowing away. They still swoon when Bill Clinton walks into the room. Saddam Hussein? He may not be a nice guy, but he's no Newt Gingrich.

All they are saying is give VX nerve gas a chance.

Take Rep. Jim McGovern of Worcester, a three-watt bulb who has become a leading light of the surrender chorus. Jaime McGovern made his decision by asking the same question he asks himself before every vote:

``What would Fidel do?''

Before the roll call, the over-under in Vegas on yes votes out of Massachusetts was one - Sen. John ``Liveshot'' Kerry. He's running unopposed, he wants to be president and his initials are JFK - Just For Kerry. JFK made up his mind after doing the math. What are the odds of U.S. victory? Approximately 100 percent. Case closed.

The surprise vote in favor of the resolution was Rep. Fast Eddie Markey of Malden.

Fast Eddie's epiphany had to do with redistrictings. He now represents Waltham, Natick, Framingham - in short, America. He probably thinks he has a Midwestern district.

As for Rep. Steve Lynch of Southie, how could any guy once arrested for beating up obnoxious Iranians during the hostage crisis vote against the president?

Then there was Rep. Martin T. (for Taliban) Meehan of Lowell. He said he was on the fence until the final moment. Translation: He wanted one more poll. If he'd voted with Saddam, he would have been heckled and booed more than Terry Glenn at this afternoon's Pats game.

Those were the yes votes. As for the no votes, round up the usual suspects. What would you expect from Ted Kennedy, so wrong for so long, although do you remember him screaming like this when Clinton was lobbing missiles at Baghdad in December 1998?

Oh, I forgot. In that case there was a clear and present danger - that the House of Representatives would impeach him, and Clinton was trying to stall the roll call until he could blackmail a few more congressmen with stolen FBI files to change their votes.

On the House side the surrender-now caucus included Rep. John Olver of Amherst, a sheep in sheep's clothing, a man so thick that he is at risk of contracting Dutch elm disease.

Rep. John Tierney of the North Shore was just as predictable. You've heard of fantasy baseball? Well, Tierney's in a fantasy Senate race against Meehan, so he had to go the other way.

Plus, Tierney and Saddam have much in common - both already have been defeated once by America, although in Tierney's case, it wasn't the USAF, it was the FEC spanking him big time for breaking all those campaign-finance laws.

Hey, nobody's perfect. Just ask Rep. Barney Frank, the Bride of Hot Bottom. So Saddam's lied to the weapons inspectors. Barney lied about his male hooker roommate, and he got away with it.

Another no vote was Rep. Richie ``the Sheik'' Neal of Springfield. This is another bum who understands clear and present danger - remember his photo finish with a grand jury back in '93? Something about health-insurance contracts at City Hall. If Richie got a pass, so shouldn't Saddam.

Another no vote was cast by Landslide Bill Delahunt (D-Quincy). Delahunt knows how to get rid of Saddam - just sneak a bill through the Legislature to jack up his pension right before he quits. It worked wonders for Bill when he was leaving town, and it'll do the same for Saddam when he screws out of Baghdad.

The only disappointment among the no's was Rep. Mike Capuano of Somerville. It's understandable, given that he represents the belly of the PC beast, Cambridge. Still, Capuano is a street guy who knows how to wield a baseball bat. All Mayor Mike can say to the Iraqis is, Not for nothing, but if yooze ever walk your Rottweiler through Powderhouse Park and it growls at me, put up your dukes, pal.

What a crew, as limp-wristed as they are crooked. It's a good thing Massachusetts isn't America, or we'd all be speaking Arabic.

If only it had been a fisting resolution, they would have crawled over barbed wire to vote "yes".

The Boston Herald is a Murdoch paper. Years ago, after Howie was regularly referring to Sen. Kennedy in his columns as "Fat Boy," Kennedy tried to put something in a piece of legislation in the dead of night to force Murdoch to sell the paper, but there was such a stink it got killed.
