To everyone: IMHO, the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Jimmy Carter is nothing more than an in-your-face to President Bush. The Nobel committee is just telling Bush they disapprove of his moves toward war with Iraq and what horrible things he has done to civilians in Afghanistan. In a way, they are warning him (and presumably all those in the US who ever want to be considered for one of their prizes) that if he does this, he will never be considered for the prize.

They would have given it to Clinton, but he is too close to his stain. Another 10 years of him going around telling everyone how great he was and they will give one to him, too.

By the way, this is more than just getting a statue - there is a $1 million prize to go with it.

My thoughts exactly, Bruce -- the timing is just too coincidental.

I wonder why thay had to go back to the "golden oldies" to select a winner this year? I mean, there must have been some well-known Muslim mullah or cleric who worked for peace and understanding over the past year .... < /s >

Seriously in this vein, Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan would actually have been a more palatable choice.

This quote from the Guardian is rather telling

"Bush and Blair were nominated for leading the war against terrorism but were seen as unlikely winners in the wake of unpopular efforts to convince the world of the need to overthrow Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

``The committee isn't that crazy,'' said Sverre Lodgaard, director of the Norwegian Institute of International affairs.

Toennesson said such a selection would be ``impossible.''

``The Nobel Peace Prize committee would lose all credibility in Europe,'' he said.

Both said any prize to an American probably would indirectly criticize current U.S. policies."

Kind of insulting to Carter I think.

Think he has the cajones to turn it down---nah!

The Swedes love Carter because he was president when America was on her knees. Also because he helped put her there.

How could Vikings become such miserable excuses...

In a way, they are warning [President Bush] (and presumably all those in the US who ever want to be considered for one of their prizes) that if he does this, he will never be considered for the prize.

I don't think the President is much deterred by such "threats"... :-)

I mean, given the winners in the past few years, it must be any decent President's dream to complete his term without doing anything that warrants a Nobel Piece-of-**** Prize!
