Lawmakers Urge FTC to Probe Sniper Weapon Sales Thu Oct 10, 3:50 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Several Democratic lawmakers on Thursday urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the marketing of military sniper rifles to civilians, noting that such a weapon may be involved in the recent Washington area shootings.
Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the top Democrat on the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee (news - web sites), and three fellow House Democrats wrote in a letter to the FTC that sniper weapons are different from standard hunting rifles because they are designed to strike a target from a distance.
"Their accuracy and range capabilities make these weapons among the most dangerous available today," the lawmakers said. "They can hit targets accurately one mile away and can inflict damage to targets up to four miles away."
Conyers noted that the FTC did a study of entertainment industry marketing practices and violence after the Columbine school shootings in 1999.
Gun control advocates gained momentum in Congress immediately after several publicized shootings in U.S. schools but foes of new controls were able to defeat the initiatives.

Yeah. Because every gang-banger carries a sniper rifle along with his GPS system and night-vision goggles.

Don't you know that ANY rifle they find IS a sniper weapon ? I understand the Polish Boys Brigade shot from rooftops (sniped) at the invading Nazi troops using even .22 cal rifles.
EVERY killing is another opportunity for the liberty-haters to attempt the theft of our guns.

That's EXACTLY what they want to grab !
They are not THAT ignorant...but they think the PUBLIC is...and they may be RIGHT about the ignorance of the Public.

genefromjersey has it right. Think they are really confused about what a sniper/assault/saturdaynitespecial is?They know exactly what they are doing. They've given us an opportunity to convince a few fencesitting hunters that "they" really won't rest till they've melted down grandpa's deer rifle.

Predicted this the day this latest round of killings started. they have demonized the "assault rifle", the "hand gun", now it's gonna be "sniper weapons". To all those hunters who always were lukewarm about gun control for all the "bad guns" , now the grabbers are comming for the hunting rifles.

Carlos Hathcock's first weapon was a Winchester M70 with a Redfield scope.
Kind of sounds like a hunting rifle to me but then I'm not a House democRAT. The sky has a different color on the planet they live on.
