The state motto of New Hampshire is "Live Free Or Die!"
Mr. President and Members of the Republican Caucuses of Congress: Read My Lips; No More Socialism!
The terms for winning conservative votes are simple and reasonable. I believe Republicans need conservative votes in order to win elections. I am a conservative voter. Every part of my heart, body and soul wants to vote for you. But whole generations of Republican candidates have let freedom and our people down. No More! If you want my vote,
MY VOTE IS FOR SALE!

Have you been paying attention to the campaign at all? Apparently not. Don't come here and lecture us. What have you been doing to promote conservatism other than sitting around complaining?

Before I make any decisions as to the merits of your argument, can you do one thing for me? Please define what a "real Conservative" is. Thanks.

I live in Arkansas, a 'battleground state' for the Senate... I am also mostly a one-issue voter (abortion) so regaining the Senate seems critical to me so that pro-life judicial appointees can get through.
But I will not be voting for my Republican Senator, Tim Hutchinson. Why? There are a few reasons, but the biggest is a commercial he put out talking about how great Social Security is and how we must ensure it is around forever.
Sorry, GOP, but I'm not big on socialism. If you keep nominating people like this, you will keep losing my vote.

I sympathize with your editorial; I'll digest it later and look at some links;

Mentioning Reagan and blasting Republicans in the same article is quite odd considering Reagan's eleventh commandant, "Speak no ill of a fellow Republican."
Also equating the Republican party as empty suits is also ridiculous as well considering Republicans won every presidential election since WWII with the exception of JFK/LBJ (voter fraud in IL?) and Carter (Watergate fallout) and Clinton (Ross Perot the spoiler).
I think GWB has already made the Republican party even more popular (chance to increase in an off-year election no less) and going forward, I am looking forward to a landslide in 2004 with both houses of Congress on the coattails.
But maybe you can resurrect Ross or Pat or ? to help give us Hillary in 2008. Then you might see a real revolutionary war again.

Your post expressed my own sentiments very well.
Here in Connecticut the Republicans (Gov. Rowland, Congr. Johnson, Simmons) are saturating the airwaves with their message.
What is their message?
We have more and better government programs for the elderly, the children, and the cities than our Democratic opponents.
They have convinced me they are liberals. I refuse to vote for any of the Republicans this year.
No, I can't vote for Rats either.
So all that is left to do is crank up the woodstove and pretend that it is politicians of both parties that are being tossed into the fire. :-(

FreeRepublic blindly backs Republicans regardless of issues or the Republican platform. You betcha. "If you don't vote Republican, you are handing it to the Democrats." is the war cry. God forbid anyone should think outside the box.

I'm very dissatisfied with the current GOP leadership also. I believe that there is really not much difference between the two parties at the top (grassroots/local level is a MUCH different story). Both of these arguments have been hashed out for years here by those on both sides.
However, a large number of good conservatives think there is a difference between the leadership of the two parties. They think that by winning the Senate, Bush and the GOP will take a hard turn to the right.
The only way to know for sure is to vote the Republicans into office, such that they have a majority in both Houses of Congress. I'm supporting my incumbent GOP congressman and I urge others to do the same.
If the GOP takes back the Senate, one of two things will occur.
The first possibility is that a conservative agenda will finally be advanced in DC. I would be very happy with this outcome.
The second possibility is that a conservative agenda will not be advanced in DC. Under this scenario, many of the grassroots Republicans will "wake up" and realize what is happening. This would lead to an increase in conservative activism at the grassroots level, and would lead to many challenges against RINOS during the primary elections. It could very well spawn another Reagan revolution or Contract With America.
The best way to "force the issue" is to give the Republicans the Senate.

I agree with your assessment. My point has always been that the REAL war is the war of ideas--and this war is fought at the grassroots level, not in Washington. Politicians will always make sure their wishes come before those of the American people, so hanging one's hopes on who gets elected is one-way ticket to disapointment. The hearts and minds of the people need to be changed. Once they can be convinced that preserving the Constitution is more important than party loyalty we might see some progress.
Keep pointing out the fallacy of GOP "conservatism." As long as people believe that blindly voting for the "R" behind a candidate's name is doing some good we will continue to get the kind of government we deserve. "Vote out the 'rats!" only works when you included Republicrats.
By the way, please add me to your ping list. :o)

All it requires is the quite determination to cast your votes only for candidates willing to act to restore the Constitutional rights that we have already lost. I'm not sure I can think of ONE.
ALL of them are invloved in campaign scandals. Most of them are involved in a plethora of scandals ranging from sex to shady business deals.
Our government has turned from working for the people to the people working for the government. It seems that all we hear anymore is investigations of our so-called leaders.
Throw em all out I say !!!

Much of the socialism that has come out of Congress in the last two years is because the numbers are so close. If the Pubs can get both houses, and then things don't change, I will have to rethink. But everything conservatives want to do has to be adjusted and compromised at the moment. If you want that to stop, and a real conservative agenda to dominate, vote Republican so we can get the Supreme Court on our side (with a hope to overturn Roe v Wade), get the tax cut made permanent, eliminate inheritance and capital gains taxes and get the economy moving without Rat interference.
If you sit on your hands, you might as well be voting personally for Paul Wellstone.
