He lives in a pineapple under the sea, in a town called Bikini Bottom. His best friend is an exuberant pink starfish named Patrick. His name is SpongeBob SquarePants, the absorbent yellow star of the most highly rated kids show on TV.

That's probably the best description of Sponge that I've seen!

What's up with that Speed Racer-Trixie romance/booty call?
To: Miss Marple
Do you have a problem with this?As a matter of fact, yes.
One doesn't need extensive research to note the decadent influence of pop culture.
I would hope that conservatives would, through their viewing habits, if not by other means, demand higher standards from "pop culture". Passively submitting yourself to the less objectionable is... well, quite frankly... degrading.
To: goodieD
I watched the show a couple times, and gave up because it's just too predictable. You ask yourself, "What's the stupidest thing they could do here?" and that's what they always do.
To: glory
In that sense, he reminds me of those kids we all remember in school following around some guy they idolize and the guy using him to his benefit(not in the gay sense) when it suited him, but not liking him at all. Men don't act that way.

grrr...I have an uncle who did the same things, although he "transformed" into a she and became a lesbian to boot. (s)he waited also until his father passed away to reveal his little secret and then manipulated grandma into paying for the surgery with our family cabin(she was and is desperately lonely since her life revolved around my grandfather). Lovely isn't it?

Say what??!??!?!!
I can understand if you don't like the show, but there isn't anything about it that would warrant the term "vile". I really hope you were just exagerating.

Sponge Bob's laugh qualifies.

Well of *course* -- sponges and starfish are not sexually dimorphic. Ever notice that they all live in a place called "Bikini Bottom".....hmmmmm

You know how it upsets the 'bots.

The Clinton males were hiding from other males throughout their secondary school tenure.

Oh, get a grip! SpongeBob is a funny, original, non-offensive cartoon which I watch with my grandchildren!
If you haven't watched it, then you have no room to talk. If you have watched it and are still pontificating, I must sadly conclude that you have no sense of humor.

Free Republic "Bushbots" vote our interests. That's the dirty little secret. We want to win. Being "right" is empty without the power to make your enlightenment a reality. Politics, and Parties, are how priorities are managed peacefully in a country of 280 million people. Bay at the moon for your hellish torture ... you can't vote GOP with a pure conscience. Man, you're noble. Next?
The "bots" stuff is boring. It's untrue.
To: maxwell; dead
LMAO! Great story. Well, in case y'all ever wondered... heh heh !! Well, I think that's a pretty cool story. Thanks......
To: Jeff Chandler
"Not as clueless as Patrick."You're right about that,Pat is clueless. Spongebob tends to go though his life with the least amount of stress possible and that makes him lovebly cluless.
To: Physicist
Sandy can't be a lesbian. She's from Texas. Two words: Molly Ivins. Except that we're discussing cartoon charac ... um, never mind.
To: glory
glory,
Spongebob likes to play in an empty box, everything else dosen't seem to matter, except his job, which he loves. He's lovebly clueless. That's the best discription I can give him.

Sponge Bob's laugh qualifies.I think the word you're looking for is "annoying", or perhaps "obnoxious". I don't think it is, although I can understand how some people might find it so. But "vile"? Vile would be if the characters indulged in K-Y Jellyfishing.
To: Bush2000
LOL! I'll admit, the laugh seemed really obnoxious at first, but after a while it just fits into the character. For some reason, the kids really love the show. I'm thankful it's not full of the kinds of realistic violence (fighting, shooting, etc.) that so many cartoons are these days. It has more of the silly, unreallistic, slapstick kind of action (a la Roadrunner and Coyote).
