At these ranges, it could be a handgun! There are several that are chambered for .223. If so, it would easily fit in a backpack. Particualarly if it easily breaks down, like a Thompson Contender, for example. They can be scoped too, just like a rifle.

Yes, it could be a TC. 200 yards would be at the edge of it's capabilities.

This is what I think they may be using...something that can be concealed while moving on foot to and from their shooting location. It's just what I picture rather than a guy walking around with a full size rifle. The Contender has been mentioned a few times.
