That would be normal given that he is s/p thoracotomy, and probable abdominal
repair(s), ?splenectomy, ?choleductal repair.

Sometimes in trauma, a ventilator is used for a short period of time just to make the rest of his care easier. Ventilator can cause much irritation after several hours, so they don't keep any patient on them longer than necessary.
