Their reporters are hearing that the Democrats in the House are extremely unhappy about the deal that Gephardt struck on Iraq with Dubya and are calling for his resignation.

Or there may be a revolt on the vote next session providing he runs again

IMO, this split is a fight between the remaining moderates and the hard left in the Democratic party.

Fragmentation into multiple splinter groups is a possibility, but another more disturbing outcome would be a national Democrat party pushed much further to the left, promoting a Green-party style of radical socialism.

Please make no mistake about Gephardt: he has to get re-elected. He's only doing what his constituents want *for the moment*. By the end of November he will be back to "normal". He had to gerrymander his district (I live in it) to save his seat....he only wins because a-he brings home the bacon and b-he has very powerful machinery.

I am glad President Bush has held his fire in this situation. He is far wiser than many people credit.

Good argument, Miss Marple, and I could be pursuaded to join your view on this case. No doubt that the pressitudes and dims would have encircled their Machiavellian Prince to fight for him to the bitter end, and this could have been a disastrous beginning of GW's presidency, which is turning out to be pretty darned good on many counts.

I would suggest, however, that at the end of the day, the morally correct decision as to how to proceed would have to come down to the clarity of the facts in evidence. I would still argue that, if clear and convincing evidence, beyond any doubt, was found of eggregious acts by these grifters, then the time would be nigh to stand for what is right whatever the costs. If as you suggest a discrete investigation HAS been conducted (may well be so), I would trust GW's judgement in the matter and if he chose not to act due to murky evidence or typical white collor crime complexities, I could accept that outcome and the good work that GW has done so far instead of going down that road. Only history will know which course was best.

But their ability to fool enough of the electorate in many regions into believing that they are in fact "moderate" democrats is the only thing, aside from rampant vote fraud, that has brought many of them to power in the first place. If the veil is pierced and the the wack-jobs take full control, their power will wane considerable. Divide and conquer is still the most effective strategy.

I think the logical progression of their behavior leads to some sort of civil war/coup, maybe not war in the traditional sense. This Machiaveli/Gore mentality coupled with their own self destructive behavior will have them trying to out-do themselves each time they get desperate. The presidential election fiasco in Florida was a first big step while the NJ game was a no-brainer for them, they didn't even blink.

So many of their supporters delude themselves though, thinking that Dem leadership cares about them, or poor people, or the working class, or whoever the victim of the day is.

What percentage of their supporters do you think are genuinely duped into thinking Dems are "good" for America, and what percentage know they are criminally corrupt, but vote for them anyway because they know from where the butter for their bread comes?

I agree with you 100% - but I think that the 2000 election was their most obvious show of outright attempting a coup. What if the media hadn't been on warp drive with their spin machine?

Should the Gore class left fully take over the party they will be so incoherent with the drunkenness of assuming power that they will be even more "in your face" about it - and not careful about trying to appear moderate. This will provide us with the opportunity to welcome the 60% of their party that will be disenfranchised by the air castles the Gorons will be living in. The 40% who remain will appear so seditious that the majority of Americans will advocate "relocating" the ultra left to somewhere nice and relaxing - like one of FEMAs camps - maybe Ft Greeley Alaska.
