I thought that back in the 60s, Remington and Winchester had a thing going with .222 and .223. Both, as I recall, were mods of the .220 Swift, which was the preferred varmit round. The .220 was reputed to wear out your barrel pretty quickly.

.22 refers to the diameter of the bullet. A "22" has a small cartridge, small amount of powder. A .223 has a longer, heavier (usually jacketed) bullet and a relatively huge cartridge with a lot of powder. No comparison in power.

The .220 Swift was hard on barrels. In about 2500 rounds a change in accuracy was obvious, but it was one heck of a fine varmit load.

That's a lot more than I really wanted to know. I wasn't aware of the 1957 military origin. I was a teenager when Remington introduced this round. There was some controversy as to whether it could be used for deer. Obviously humans are a lot more fragile than deer.

How about this from UPI ?

BALTIMORE - Former FBI profilers say the killer of five people in suburban Maryland this week is probably a calculating white man in his 20s or early 30s who lives nearby and has a score to settle.

"This isn't somebody who just snapped," said Clinton Van Zandt, a former FBI agent. "This is someone who likes what they're doing. This is someone who is playing God. They're sticking their finger in the face of the authorities and society."

The gunman "is somebody who is cold, who is calculating, who has the skills and doesn't care who they hurt," Van Zandt said.

"Statistically, this is something white males normally do," he added. "(But) You don't want to exclude any race, any ethnicity because there is always the aberrant behavior."

Probably all they know is the diameter of the bullet was .223".

Not true. They retrieved a bullet that entered a store through window. It landed by a book. My guess is they have a 55 grain FMJ. FMJ bullets are not frangible so it would not be distorted very much. Additionally 223 caliber bullets for high velocity cartridges fall into a very narrow range for weights. Hardly any commercial bullets are made in FMJ except for the 223. It is actually easy to tell what cartidge they are using, even if it was a HP or HPBT.

"Hispanics" my *ss-they're Middle-eastern! Just like the July 4th airport shooting; the government keeps telling us to watch out for terrorists, but when terrorist acts occur, they do everything they can to cover them up!

Eaxctly! I think these shooters are Middle Eastern. Random slaying of innocents is exactly the kind of terrorism practiced by barbaric Islamic extremists. They are trained snipers.

I've never heard of trained, sniper Hispanic terrorists.

I've said it before. Our government is more afraid of what we will do to these bastards to tell us the truth.

But he cautioned that they could be another non-white race. "We do not count on them being two Hispanic males," said Officer Derek Baliles. "Appearances can be interpreted. We do not want to limit anything at all." "It's possible," he added, that the suspects could be Middle Eastern.

Hispanics don't really have a recent history of terrorist attacks in the DC area, but arabs do. If Harry Truman was still in office, maybe hispanics would have been the most likely subjects, but this is a new century with a different threat. It would be much more reasonable to announce that two arabs are the subject of the hunt unless the intent is to bar arabs from any public suspicion.

This spokesman may as well have said nothing.

Another Freeper linked to this article a couple of days ago - my apologies for not remembering who, (it may have been backhoe), but it sure is food for thought:

The training video shows al-Qaida operatives practicing the following kinds of assaults:

using pickup trucks with shooters concealed in the bed of the trucks;

using motorcycles as a shooting platform for drive-bys and assassinations;

execution of prisoners;

ambushes of law-enforcement officers;

residential assassinations;

assassination on a golf course using a rocket-propelled grenade and rifle fire;

drive-up kidnapping of target walking on a street;

use of tunnels, storm drains and sewers for infiltration during urban raids;

rappelling from rooftops of buildings to make entry on upper floors;

use of motorcycles for grenade attacks;

and raids on buildings with large numbers of occupants – perhaps schools or office buildings.

Analysts point out that all scenarios involving prisoners and hostages ended in execution. None included plans for negotiated settlements for escape by terrorists.

The gunman "is somebody who is cold, who is calculating, who has the skills and doesn't care who they hurt,"

Islamic terrorist snipers who gunned down innocent people in Israeli settlements, markets, a university, etc. comes to mind. They are so cold blooded they shot a pregnant woman and her child. There was one case where an infant was shot in the head by a sniper. This may be the second wave. I believe the feds fear the worst as well, as evidenced by the immediate lock-down of the schools. The intelligence on attacking American schools came out at about the same time this terror spree started.

What stinking malarkey: ""Statistically, this is something white males normally do." -- Clinton Van Zandt.

Colin Ferguson. Hey that is a white guy name. Maybe that's what drove the negroid complexioned man to mass murder. And I guess we ain't counting gang initiations, drive-bys, and shooting of happenstance passers-thru on drug dealer claimed streets. Not counting those for some reasons unknown.

Maybe in CVZ's stats he only includes white boys. That explains it.

Keep in mind that Mohammed Hayadet, the Egyptian who shot up the El Al counter at LAX, was initially described by police and the FBI as "Hispanic".

So was this guy:

Sorry, take everything that meenie posts about firearms with a truckload of salt. The .218 Bee is a fairly old varmint cartrige that is in the low 3000 ft/s range. He may mean the .220 Swift which has a muzzle vel of around 4000 ft/s.

Also, AR15s (semi auto M-16s) are used in long range target shooting out to 1000 yards, and they are competive. Obviously these are not off the shelf rifles, but have had conciderable tuning done.

We will know what these creeps are using when they are caught. For now, let us not overspeculate.

"Hispanics" my *ss-they're Middle-eastern!

Took my words exactly.

I'm pretty po'd right now. This political correctness bullcrap is killing people. Politicians need to be shouted at, leo's need FReeped, etc.

Frickin' call a spade a spade, so to speak.

This is a terrorist incident, perpetrated by ME men, between 18 & 35. Looking for Hispanics is a waste of time.

I remember thinking at the time "how can an illegal alien buy a gun in this country"? This was about 8 years ago.

How's an illegal, as opposed to a legal alien, going to pass the background check? I suspect they were legal. You don't have to speak English to be a legal resident. 8 years ago is just before the backcheck went into effect, IIRC. The courts have ruled that the group "the people" consists of more than just citizens, it inlcludes legal residents, and for some purposes (due process for instance), but not this one, even illegals.
