Va. Shooting 'Similar' To Maryland Shooting Spree

UPDATED: 4:50 p.m. EDT October 4, 2002ROCKVILLE, Md. -- A woman was shot outside a store near Fredericksburg, Va., Friday afternoon, in an incident with similarities to the shootings in Montgomery County, Md.
Spotsylvania County police say the woman was loading packages into her car about 2:30 p.m. at a Michaels crafts store outside Spotsylvania Mall when she was shot in the back. There was no official word on her condition, but witnesses say she was breathing and speaking.
The shot apparently was fired from a distance. The first incident in the Maryland shooting spree was a shot fired through the window of a Michaels store.
Police are not saying there's a connection between Friday afternoon's incident and the Maryland shootings. They say it's too soon to draw any conclusions.
However, Montgomery County police chief Charles Moose says he will send his investigators to Virginia to see if there is a connection to the shootings in his county.

(Fredericksburg-AP) -- Police say the weapon that wounded a woman outside a mall near Fredericksburg, Virginia, does NOT appear to have been a high-powered rifle like the one involved in a series of shootings in Montgomery County.Spotsylvania County Police Captain Michael Timm says a woman was shot in the lower back as she loaded packages into her car.
Timm says the bullet passed through the woman's body, and police are looking for it.
No official word on the woman's condition.

Montgomery County police are sending investigators to the scene.
