Another DC-area sniper-style shooting
Wife (FReeper nina0113) | October 4, 2002 | Steve0113

Posted on 10/04/2002 12:02:50 PM PDT by Steve0113

Another broad-daylight shooting just occurred, this time in Fredericksburg, VA, just off I-95. It's not even on the news yet.

About an hour's drive south of where the Montgomery County shootings happened, a woman was shot in the parking lot of a Michaels fabric store. My wife was in the store at the time. The victim had left the store and carried her purchases to her minivan. She unlocked the minivan and was loading her stuff into it when she was shot. No sign of the shooter.

No one else was injured.

The woman was taken away in an ambulance, condition unknown. Her license plate (which I'm not going to post) indicated that she had several children.

Maybe, but it sounds mighty familiar to me. I used to wire and assemble harnesses for the military. (sub-contracted work) I worked on the M1 line. If I remember right it was a General Dynamics product. Abrams?

But would an ordinary criminal engage in a drive-by at a time like this? When the police are out in full force?

I also have an M-1A from Springfield Armory. I've had it for a while, but it's still NIB because I've been moving around alot lately. Just also be aware that there's also a difference between 7.62x51NATO and .308Win.

Thanks for clearing that up. But, I really thought that an M1-A1 was a tank.

I just wondered if you kept it in the garage or on the street. (kidding lol)

Yes. Thompson Center Contender comes to mind. It is a single shot pistol, btw.

The person shot while sitting on the bench undercuts that theory. Plus I've never heard environmentalists rail against taxi's, and so there is no clear message yet. Environmentalists would probably have established a pattern where a message could be discerned.

That's correct. Some of the early M-16s had 1-in-14 twist rates, now they have 1-7, because they use much heavier bullets.

I didn't have the 2K for the Springfield that I REALLY wanted, so I have the Poly Tech. Works very well and have taken deer with it (5 RD clip in this case) using bronze tips that I load. The bronze tips have less deformity in the mag than other soft points and silver tips. Poly Tech added the "1" for their model line name.

You're right. The M1-A1 is the M1 Carbine with a metal folding stock. I'm pretty sure that it'd be under 16" with the stock folded, and therefore verboten without a class III stamp. I'm pretty sure he was talking about the M1A (civy version of the M-14).

Thanks for the link. At the bottom it says:

During the Gulf War only 18 Abrams tanks were taken out of service due to battle damage: nine were permanent losses, and another nine suffered repairable damage, mostly from mines. Not a single Abrams crewman was lost in the conflict. There were few reports of mechanical failure. US armor commanders maintained an unprecedented 90% operational readiness for their Abrams Main Battle Tanks.

What a relief. I always wondered how they held up. Nearly lost my job when I went over heads and reported directly to mil-spec about certain procedures not being done properly on the line. Mil-spec checked and shut the line down. Needless to say the company was NOT happy with me, and labled me a troublemaker.

D'oh! Got my dimensions wrong. The minimum length of a non-shotgun barrel is 16" under the NFA. The length of the barrel would, of course, be independent of the stock. The overall length must be at least 26" under the NFA.

All spec M1 Carbines are 35.5" in total length, and the folding stock on the M1A1 reduces that by about 10". That's still under the limit and makes a Class III stamp requried, presuming there is no prohibitive state law.

Phew.

NFA text

I been most of the Abrahams (if not all) that were total losses were taken out by friendly fire, such as Apache helicopters shooting at the wrong target.

That was the A1 series that was sent to the Gulf in '91. We've been at A2 for a few years now.
