Another DC-area sniper-style shooting

Another broad-daylight shooting just occurred, this time in Fredericksburg, VA, just off I-95. It's not even on the news yet.

About an hour's drive south of where the Montgomery County shootings happened, a woman was shot in the parking lot of a Michaels fabric store. My wife was in the store at the time. The victim had left the store and carried her purchases to her minivan. She unlocked the minivan and was loading her stuff into it when she was shot. No sign of the shooter.

No one else was injured.

The woman was taken away in an ambulance, condition unknown. Her license plate (which I'm not going to post) indicated that she had several children.

Do you have some info on that? I know that the .223Rem was standardized by SAAMI for civilian use, whereas the 5.56x45 round was standardized by NATO for the militaries of member nations.

As far as I am aware, there was only one standard for the 7.62x39.

Also, I'm only speaking of dimensions, not different types of bullets like HP, FMJ, TMJ, BT, tracer, etc.

A .223 Remmington and a 5.56 NATO are the same cartridge. One is a U.S. commercial designation and the other is a metric military designation.

Some variations in bullet weight and bullet construction are encountered but are fully interchangable in firearms marked with either designation.

Bullet weight can vary from 40-70 grains and be either full metal jacket, hollow point, soft point or steel tipped penetrating round as the current NATO spec SS-109 bulleted round is.

Cartridge nomneclature can be very confusing for the uninitiated!

This could be a copycat shooting, but I was wondering today if yesterday's shooters were going to move on to another location and start the whole thing over again. It could be ME terrorism, or a wackjob like the guy who went around with the pipebombs earlier this year.

I have quite a few plastic bandoliers of these green tips that I sure hope I have not wasted money on. Just to have...you know. I also have a bunch of NATO Ball for my M1-A1. Will check this out before I try any.

Why is the news today calling these sniper style shootings?

Because the killer(s) are operating like snipers. They quietly move into position, take aim, hit their target at long range with a suppressed weapon, killing with one shot, and quietly make their escape.

I am not trying to suggest any moral equivalency between these snipers and snipers in the military, just that they use the same tactics.

You're likely on the right track...a signature of some sort: the cell name to tell their money man to send cash...it's us!!

Haven't seen the layout of the plazas in relation to the highway and surrounding topography.

Are we assuming there is a vehicle involved in close vicinity??? Do we really know the shots were made from a vehicle???

It sure would be easier to walk away in the confusion...Nobody would notice someone running or walking away..it would be a normal reaction.

What's the range on that handheld weapon?? They were talking about a silencer..

There have been cases before of multiple gunmen acting as deranged killers rather than terrorists (like Harris and Klebold, or the boys who pulled the fire alarm and hid in the trees before shooting at kids and teachers from their school)

I think about it, the more relavent it is that all seem to start at a Michael's. This could be a coded "message" to any other cells about who is behind it; in other words, if your local news is running a story on a nearby shooting spree, and one of the victims was in the parking lot of a Michael's, that is your cue to begin "plan 14XKM".
