Another DC-area sniper-style shooting

Another broad-daylight shooting just occurred, this time in Fredericksburg, VA, just off I-95. It's not even on the news yet.

About an hour's drive south of where the Montgomery County shootings happened, a woman was shot in the parking lot of a Michaels fabric store. My wife was in the store at the time. The victim had left the store and carried her purchases to her minivan. She unlocked the minivan and was loading her stuff into it when she was shot. No sign of the shooter.

No one else was injured.

The woman was taken away in an ambulance, condition unknown. Her license plate (which I'm not going to post) indicated that she had several children.

Since she was shot in the back I seriously doubt she'll be able to provide any eyewitness details. I'm happy that she's going to survive. Now if she has a disgruntled husband or something....that's another story.

Baz was accompanied by Bassam Mousa Reyati, a Jordanian, who entered as a student in 1989 and received residency in 1992 on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen. Hlal Mohammed, a Jordanian, was the third terrorist.

We have drive byes also, but ususally drug-related, done from close range with handguns. If this is a couple of loose nut thrill killers, they've been practicing and planning.

I think these are the work of some determined killer, but uncertain am I regarding the Al-Qaeda/Terrorist sympathizer angle.

Terrorists don't tend to leave much doubt whether their actions were intended as terrorism. That's why I don't think there's much chance this is an al-Qaida plot.

These are thrill kills, I think.

Here's an interesting though. You've got the white, nondescript panel van driving through urban traffic. It stops for a stop light in traffic. The shooter opens his gun port/window/door, acquires a random target, and shoots. The driver drives off as soon as the light changes. For most of the area around where I work, this would mean a firing distance of anywhere from less than 50 meters to more than 400. Easily done with the proper firearm and stable shooting platform, (remember the van is stopped in traffic). The van would never be seen in a parking lot, would be highly mobile, and would fade into the background clutter of an urban setting.

We pray for the swift exposure of these persons whose intent is to kill, maim and destroy. May the totality of their incentive be laid bare and may it be published by those in charge without bias.

May the Lord put a blanket of calmness over this region, quashing fear and panic in the population, its and ability leaders and any who look to Him for deep seated peace (shalom).

May God give wisdom to the LEO's to "hear", to "see" and to perceive accurately (without presupposition, prejudgement or vain assumption) and responsibly what is being described to them by witnesses. May God give boldness and courage to witnesses to come forward if they have seen or know anything significant and weed out others. May He cause righteous judgement to prevail in every avenue of the investigation and the reporting of the results.

May He bring comfort to those who mourn and a spirit of genuine thanks to the hearts of those whose friends and loved ones have been spared.

Even without a suppressor, it is nearly impossible to determine the origin of an unexpected single shot, especially in a developed area where the sound bounces off the buildings. In that same setting, it is even quite difficult to track quick multiple shots.

It's just a habit when I'm using written expression on a public forum. As I've confessed here ad nauseum, I'm far from pious. My own personal language amongst adult male friends of like mind is rather.....salty.

It's just my little feeble attempt at respect for our creator. I know a lot of evangelicals and orthodox jews do the same but I'm neither.

It's at least 45 or 50 miles away. Picture DC metro as a big clock face--yesterday's shootings occured at about 10 O'Clock and very close in to the center of the clock. This is at 6 O'Clock, way to the south--the very southern edge of what could even be considered a DC suburb. It's actually about halfway between DC and Richmond.
