I read in one story about the man who was mowing the grass had a hole in his chest that was about the diameter of a coffee cup rim, this was stated by someone that tried to help the man while he was laying on the ground dying. At first they said (witness who tried to help the man), they thought he hit something with the lawn mower and that it hit him in the chest. I don't know much about guns, but it seems like bullet hole left in the man's chest seemed to be large in size. What type of rifle or bullet would leave such a large hole the size of an average coffee cup rim? Unless he was shot at close range.

The size of the wound could be a result of several factors, I think. (Come on gun guys, help me out here).
But it would be very consistent with a large bore, high powered rifle.

The exit wound is always larger than the entrance wound in these types of things.

What type of rifle...Any medium caliber rifle round (say .243 Winchester to .308 Winchester) would leave that type of wound, as an exit wound (where the bullet left the body after entering from the other side and expanding). If such a wound were in the chest area, then the bullet would have entered from the other side of his body, or from his back...

I read in one story about the man who was mowing the grass had a hole in his chest that was about the diameter of a coffee cup rim I'm wondering if a very-high-velocity varmint round shattering on impact would do something like that. Otherwise, it would have to be an exit wound.
The only other possibility I could think of that would produce such a wound would be a a 12-guage at very close range, but people would have seen the shooter then/
I'm wondering if Travis McGee would have some idea.

What type of rifle or bullet would leave such a large hole the size of an average coffee cup rim? Perhaps that was the exit wound from a high-power rifle (say 30-06, or .308 Win) using a hollow point bullet. The entrance wound would be very small, exit could be massive.

What type of rifle or bullet would leave such a large hole the size of an average coffee cup rim? Unless he was shot at close range.Just about any medium to big game hunting rifle would do this. I could cite calibers but any citation would be mere speculation on my part. Modern hunting ammunition for say deer expands after hitting the target. Such a projectile is less likely to merely wound the deer and cause it a slow painful death. Stay well - stay safe - Stay armed - Yorktown

Again, anything you would use to go deer hunting, a soft
or hollow point rifle bullet.

Exit wound from a soft lead bullet. Bullet expands at impact and rips thru the body.

What do you mean by the size of an average coffee cup rim? The rim of my coffee cup is only a few milimeters thick. No offense but there is a huge difference between the size of a coffee cup and the size of a coffee cups rim...
I"m not trying to be cute I'm just trying to get the facts.
