I read in one story about the man who was mowing the grass had a hole in his chest that was about the diameter of a coffee cup rim I'm wondering if a very-high-velocity varmint round shattering on impact would do something like that. Otherwise, it would have to be an exit wound.
The only other possibility I could think of that would produce such a wound would be a a 12-guage at very close range, but people would have seen the shooter then/
I'm wondering if Travis McGee would have some idea.

Okay if it is an exit wound then just about any hollow point may have caused this damage. If it is an entry wound then It could be something in the.375 caliber and up range or something along the the lines of a 6mm magnum. It is impossible to be more specific than that because we can not see the wound.
