McBride blasts rich as his tax plan hits poor
Published October 3, 2002
Bill McBride criticizes Jeb Bush for giving billions in tax cuts to the wealthiest residents while cutting school programs.
"This state has $1 million and $6 million and $7 million homes and marinas filled with $100,000 boats," McBride said during the primaries. "Surely, we can find enough money to take care of and improve our public schools and protect our children."
But McBride isn't going after the mansion and yacht owners to fund the bulk of his proposed $1 billion increase in education .... much of his tax is a wealth transfer from households making less than $30,000 a year to households making more than $30,000 a year.
....If the purpose of taxes has become to change behavior, why not taxplaintiffs' attorneys? Then we get tort reform with our revenues.
Imposing the state's 6 percent sales tax on legal services would bring in $426 million, just about the amount McBride wants to increase teacher salaries next year. I think he would agree his former corporate clients are better able to pay this than the average smoker.
McBride's plan is bad on another level. He is funding education programs that will go up in cost each year -- higher teacher pay and lower class sizes, for example -- with a revenue source that will go down each year.
...This will leave McBride with an almost immediate budget shortfall. <

All the boats and nice homes McB's referring to belong to Terry MacAuliffe. McB has tunnel vision. He only knows what he sees right in front of him and then it's forgotten. He's not a man of any depth.
Governor Bush has a proven track record and except for the cheating that we all expect, he will be the winner.
Then, at the right time, he'll run for President and I'll be exhausted by then. LOL

McBride's plan is bad on another level. He is funding education programs that will go up in cost each year -- higher teacher pay and lower class sizes, for example -- with a revenue source that will go down each year. I got in to a debate with a McBride supporter at work the other day on JUST THIS ISSUE. McBride wants to fund his education plan using a $0.50 tax on cigarettes. So, I asked, is the Government going to start PROMOTING smoking to keep its revenue stream going? And with Amendment 6 banning smoking in public, where is the money come from if people start quitting like the people pushing that Amendment want?
He just walked away.....

JB, Pinging you for one of your great bumps on this one please.

All the boats and nice homes McB's referring to belong to Terry MacAuliffe. Those $1, $6 and $7 million homes are slums. Rich Republicans like Rush live in 2 acre ocean front estates - like worth $24 million.

RE your post #37 - That's interesting he went to a private school. I ket wondering, throughout the debate as McMumble was saying how awful FL public schools are, and how all FL kids are being "hurt" by FCAT -- if FL public schools are so bad, why doesn't he yank his own kids out? He doesn't want to hurt his own kids, does he???
