Speaking for myself, it is quite possible to be a real Vietnam vet and still have no combat experience. My guess is that at least half the soldiers that spent a full year in Vietnam never faced any significant danger. Algore included.

I'm legally blind in one eye and have been since early childhood. When I was 18, my Dad, a WWII Aleutian Islands vet told me there was no way I'd get into the army. So, I tried the USAF instead. I practically had to beg the doctor to pass me. I volunteered for Vietnam. They sent me to Korea for a year. When I was in Korea I volunteered again for Vietnam. This time I made it. After my tour in Vietnam I was sent back to the states. I volunteered again for Vietnam and again I was sent to Korea. By the time my tour was over, the war was too. Bonoir and McDermott are slime. Period.
