Jim McDermott and David Bonior have "MISLED" America about their Vietnam service.

Congressmen Jim McDermott and David Bonior have "MISLED" the American people about their Vietnam service.

During their Baghdad press conference, both McDermott and Bonior touted their Vietnam combat service, while calling President Bush a liar and praising Sadam Hussein's openness and cooperation.

Upon returning to the U.S., the two congressmen held a press conference and again highlighted their Vietnam combat service, as an obvious measure to boost their qualifications to remark on the horrors of war.

Following the news conference, McDermott appeared on MSNBC and once again clearly established at the onset of the interview that he had served in Vietnam.

And most recently, Major Garrett of Fox News reported that he had just talked with Bonoir and McDermott, and noted that both of them had "fought in the Vietnam War"

But easily available evidence indicates neither of them ever left the safety of the CONUS.

According to Congress Merge Online, McDermott's military experience is shown as:

Professional Experience (including Military):
Long Beach Naval Station, US Navy Medical Corps,1968-70
Private Practitioner, 1970-87

According to the Detroit Free Press (May 18, 2002), Bonoir's military experience is:
"...He enlisted in the Air Force after receiving his draft notice because enlisting meant he had more control over where he might be stationed; getting drafted most likely would mean being sent to Vietnam. He served in California in 1968-72 and earned his master's degree at the same time."

Why the press blindly buys off on what these two traitors say is incredible.

Just a couple of the standard journalism questions would show these two as the liars and traitors they really are:

When were you in Vietnam?

What campaign/service ribbons were you awarded?

Why are you lying about Vietnam combat service, when both of you spent your military time in the State of California ?

Just maybe someone from the press will see this and take the both of them to task.

"Whatever happened to conscience and shame in the national political scene?"

I know you can't be seriously asking this question. Not after following many of your posts over the past few years. Politics and Integrity don't mix these days and very few Politicians have even a clue about integrity. And it ain't just DemocRATS, although they lend new definition of a regular basis to SLIME. In fact slime almost looks good compared to the DemocRAT leadership and their supporters these days.

I never thought I would think this or even say it, but I am hopeful I am still alive when the "right" takes to the streets. And I hope it isn't too long iin coming.

I did hear McDermont on a FOXNEWS clip tonight say something to the effect of not critisizing he and Bonior because they were Vietnam vets and then he said"...some of those people who want us in this war never even went to Vietnam."

He said it so one would assume those two were in country. Dirty politics indeed!

I was in Nam for most of '68 (including TET) and did not see combat.

What happens if you're caught in combat as a non-contestant? Does that count for anything? Happened to me when I was 16. My dad was a (US) intelligence analyst in Cyprus from '73-74 when (1) the Greek officers staged a coup, and (2) the Turkish military forces attacked one week later.

We were living on the beach with all the other families of the respective linguists, code-breakers and analysts. The Brits were trying to make arrangements to get everyone out after the coup, but no one figured the Turks would react so soon.

The morning of the attack, they came in first with F-4s, then started landing troops. The Brits had to act fast, so they sent a troop of commandos (their Marines) to go house to house and round everyone up.

They put us in a couple of transports, then met up a mile down the road with APCs and tanks. Everywhere around us the Greeks were running by, and here and there they were firing off artillery.

The Brits finally got everyone together and the convoy made a dash for the nearest base around 5 miles away. I've still got the photos I took hanging out of the back of the truck of all the action.

Two days later Nixon sent in the Med fleet from Naples to get everyone off (including the tourists). They dropped us off in Beirut to a greeting of armed troops watching as we got processed in. 6 mos later the Lebanon civil war started.

Oh, one last thing, my parents were visiting Israel the previous year in Oct. Yep, took them a week to get out during the Yom Kippur war.

Hell, my mom's got more combat experience than either of these two guys.

Oh, and one more thing: we were flying SR-71s into Cyprus.

They said their desire for peace was based on their own firsthand knowledge of the horrors of war in Vietnam.

"We paid. We did our part. Nobody's going to accuse us of being traitors to our country," McDermott said.

Talk about misleading the country! Jerks.

McDermott rejected the criticism, saying his own experience as a Vietnam War doctor had heightened his concern for American troops who could be placed in harm's way. McDermott did not back off the comments he made about Bush in Iraq.

He was a psych doctor in the states, no? LIARS.

According to this thread, McDermott admitted on Crossfire that he never was in Vietnam.

Slime.

Either CNN must be monitoring FreeRepublic.com, or they got a bag of email from here. Novak put MCDERMOTT in the crosshairs and asked where and how he spent his Vietnam War time. The liar sheeplishly admitted he'd never spent a day outside California.

Libs lie whenever it suits them and when you happen to catch them and call them on it, it has been days and the damage has been done.

Everyone in the country now thinks these two useful idiots are Vietnam Vets.

My guess is that at least half the soldiers that spent a full year in Vietnam never faced any significant danger. Algore included.

The true number is closer to 90%. Really.

I was going to say 90%, but except for Cam Rahn Bay, where I was, there was no fully safe place, although Saigon was probably safer than Central Park at night. To the best of my knowledge there were three deaths at the Bay during 1968 -- two in a traffic accident, and one stabbed to death while on guard duty. Probably a doper.

People who haven't been involved in war shouldn't take the perceptions given by movies like "We Were Soldiers", etc. as reality.Hollywood is squeezing several days or weeks of action into 2 hours and making things seem more intense than reality actually is.

Say what? "We Were Soldiers Once" IS reality. That whole thing happened over a 2 or 3 day period. Maybe you have a different definition of "intense" than I do,but in MY book, overnight firefights were you are in danger of being overrun is plenty intense.

I suspect he won't be too much longer answering my *ping*.

A little longer than I would have liked, but here nonetheless. twyn1 made a good call on the Ministry of Information, no? Have a look around twyn1 at one of our very own in-house efforts:

BTW, rumor has it that Mad Dog McDermott and Beetle Bonior were both nominated for this medal for their services during the Viet Nam conflict:

Just a rumor you understand ; )

I have over 20 years in two services, am a Vietnam ERA vet, and nobody I met would EVER claim to be a Vietnam Vet if he/she didn't actually go over there.

There is a female vet on FR who was a nurse in Hawaii, and she claims to be a combat vet. In fact, she even called me a wannabe in a FR mail because she didn't like some of the things I wrote. There ain't no argueing with her, either. She is convinced SHE is a real combat vet.

Did you watch McDermott tonight on Donahaue? He carefully said he served during "the Viet Nam era". He also said, he "took care of men coming back to Los Angeles".

In his ABC interview from Baghdad, and this morning on the Capital steps, McDermott said he served in Viet Nam. I think those of us who have spent the afternoon emailing media outlets has caused McDermott to amend his claims. I emailed Donahue. Tonight Donahue said, "OK Congressman, so you served during the Viet Nam era, you weren't actually in Viet Nam, but ........." I submit Donahue was trying to clean up the false impression McDermott intentionally gave in earlier interviews and statements."

Sadly, the media will NOT hold McDermott accountable for lying about his military record.
