Why, is there some kind of record to break?
To: RKM
At the time of his announcement, they were coming on the board so fast that I dropped 30 posts behind in my reading. And I was moving fast! We must have hit some kind of record in posts per minute this p.m.!

25,078 and still climbing 25,000 plus over 10,000 (15,000?) more on preceeding posts before FR went to the new system supporting more than a couple hundred posts per thread.
BUT... I don't think we've ever gooten to 2000 in one day.
Angelo?

They are pigs. And Torricelli is a simpering criminal.

You can't make any similar case that the voters who voted for Torch in the primary intended to create a vacancy. No, but if he resigns his office before the election but within 30 days of it, McGreevey will be able to appoint his successor for the time being while still keeping his name on the ballot. Then the NJ Democrats can continue to vote for Toricelli claiming that they knew that their vote was really for his appointed successor (as another poster called it, a living variation of the Carnahan gambit) and then if he wins, McGreevey can appoint the same person when the term starts next January. That will clinch the seat until the next Senatorial election anyway.
Not a pleasant prospect to me, but it seems plausible.

Get over here and read all 1200 posts ASAP, lol. You didn't tell me The Torch is practically a saint. I had to wait and hear it from his own lips. After listening to his speech I am beyond amazed the Vatican hasn't beatified him
Aren't you jealous that you didn't have such IMmor(t)als representing you? I mean, I should be thanking him for creating the air I breath, I guess. I am going to attempt to read all of these posts. Are they going to pi$$ me off even more then I could be pi$$ed off?" Is that even possible?

4. He thought he would get away with it.

I very much doubt if Torch, alive or dead, can pull a Carnahan. NJ may be more corrupt than MO, but Torch isn't exactly an object of sympathy these days.

That's the obstacle they have. Torricelli's pretty much disgraced at this point. You don't get much sympathy there. And if there are already absentee ballots sent out with his name on them...
I'm going back to my earlier call. The Dems are doing this to free up resources for the close races in the MidWest and Plains States (MN, SD, IA, and MO - add GA to the list as well) and for seats they want to pick up (CO, AR, and TX open).
It's a political version of the sacrifice bunt. Hopefully, this is out of the way. And Iraq is NOT on the front page any more...

They went this fast, 24/7 for 36 days. Only at that time, they weren't consequtive; so when it got to about 200 posts, we had to LINK a new thread to it.
To: deport
Some clever guy pointed out that though the time has been blown for the Dems to get a new name on the ballot, that does not necessarily mean that The Torch can't get himself off the ballot, and clear the way for a "clean" write in campaign. I don't the distinction flies because then a party can choose whether to keep a name on and collect votes with it anticipating a resignation, or get it off. What I predict will happen after the Dems lose their court case, it that they will NOT run a write in campaign, say vote for Torch, and Torch promises to resign, and the Gov announces who will be the successor, and the successor campaigns. Sort of Carnahan 2, except that one has to trust the Torch that he WILL resign. Will it work? I doubt it: it is too complicated and clever by half. But that is what they will do.

Very possible as the Democrats want to win and will try every way they can. I think it's part of a ploy to bring the Party back together since so many were saying they couldn't vote for him again. But if they felt he'd not accept the win but withdraw/resign or whatever you do after winning and let the Gov. appoint his replacement then I see this as a possible senario. What have they got to lose if it comes down to it? It will be very interesting to watch this play out over the next 35 days.....
To: Howlin
Some of the 911 threads may have been this fast also but the problem with them is that there were so many that none would stay up very long before another became the hot one. You are correct about many threads prior to the conversion to this format getting to 150/200 posts and then a new thread being started due to load time since the threads didn't truncate at 50 post. Those older puters, long treads and slow modems...
To: Constitutional Patriot
I laughed through his fake tears. If he wants to make a living I wouldn't advise acting. LOL
To: deport
The big difference is, theguy is corrupt and dishonest - everyone knows it.
But the problem is, the Torch was honest at the WORST possible time. And that is going to give the GOP a lot of hay. It's a clear "bait and switch" by the NJ Dems, and let me tell you something, there ought to be some folks out there making "bait and switch" sound like the new prefix for "Democrats" in that race and elsewhere.
