Brit just said that "Karl" (I assume Rove) says there is more info out there about Toricelli.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again for the zillionth time: Come January the RATS will be completely out of power on the federal level for the first time in fifty years

I'm not saying your prediction won't come true but have you seen Tim Hutchison's numbers lately? He aint going to hold that seat. The GOP needs to pick up 3 seats gross because they will lose Hutchison which offsets Torricelli and you need a one seat cushion so keep Chafee from "growing in office" just like Jumpin Jim.

Brit just said that Carl is reporting that there is "more out there" on Torricelli. Your earlier suspicions are right!

There is no VACANCY, He resigned from the campaign, But his announcement might be a ploy to force him to resign and blame Republicans for challenging him

The only exception ever recognized by a New Jersey court was in the case of the death of a nominee. Petition of Koegh-Dwyer, 106 N.J. Super. 567, 256 A.2d 314 (1969), affirmed 54 N.J. 523, 257 A.2d 697.

I looked at this case. The court based its decision upon the intent of the voters. The winning candidate in a primary was already dead before the primary. The candidate behind him sued to get the nomination. The court held against him, because it held that the voters, knowing that the winning candidate was dead, intended to create a vacancy, so that a party committee could name a substitute. You can't make any similar case that the voters who voted for Torch in the primary intended to create a vacancy.

"How many other states would elect someone like that?"

In AZ the Republicans elect people like that all the time...

When Brit asked 'the panel' if the NJ fiasco would give the Pubs the Senate majority, all three said yes, with Mara giving an especially funereal nod.

It would render the deadline of 45 days a total dead letter. It would replace a bright line test with some amorphous test as to when a switch could be made. It is not authorized by statute. It would allow manipulation of campaigns. If it gets close to the election and you are behind, why just put someone else in, who the other guy hasn't been campaigning against. The policy reasons not to go down this road are enormous, and there are almost no policy reasons going the other way. It will not stand. The courts will not do it.

Well here is the precedent for why we didn't go after Carnahan. Makes more sense now.

The Torch is as dirty as they come. I'm betting some mob ties are about to surface. No proof, of course, just a hunch. Bobby just seems like that kind of guy.... easily manipulated and compromised.

Yep, he sure does. Richard Bey on The Buzz (local ABC radio NYC) keeps harping away at Forrester along the lines of "but I just want NJ voters to have a choice" - meaning that the Dems should be allowed to replace Torricelli as a candidate even though it is past the deadline. Uh hello Richard, the only ones denying anyone a choice is the Dems! They're the ones removing their choice. If they wanted to provide a DIFFERENT choice, they should have acted within the law and done it by the 16th.

But like I said, its not as if they care about the law. Same old story - don't like the way the game is going? Change the rules!

Whether Bubba would do it is iffy though. But The Torch spent the day on the phone with him trying.

When his name was first mentioned, I thought, oh great, here were go. Even though he needs the limelight, I think he would decline. After all, being a Senator is a step down from having been President. I doubt he would do it. He can say anything he wants, any time, right now, and makes (too much) money doing it.

IF he did, then I would think that he was TOLD to do it. A higher up calling shots? If so, who?

Is it to early to make a toast for 40 years of Republican leadership in the US congress????

With Trent Lott in charge? Keep the cork in until we get some different leadership.
