Another good book dealing with more of the history of Soviet communism is "The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Empire" by Brian Crozier. It gets into a lot of the early history of Lenin/Stalin/Trotsky and the atrocities that ocurred in the 1910's, the strange alliances and strategy of the Soviet Union during WWII, Arab/Sino and African alliances, up to Gorbechev and his glasnost.
