Laura Bush confident in Mexico-U.S. immigration agreement

EFE - 9/26/2002

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush said she was convinced an immigration agreement could be reached between Mexico and the United States, because their leaders want it.

Mrs. Bush, who participated in the 11th Conference of the Wives of Heads of State and Government in Mexico City on Wednesday, said, "I do see a solution to this problem."

In statements to the Mexican press made in Washington and published Wednesday in Reforma daily, Laura Bush explained she and her husband had lived in Texas for many years and have a special sensitivity for the problems of the U.S. Hispanic community.

"There are so many stories about immigrants and the children of immigrants in the United States. Our whole country is made up of immigrants who were able to overcome poverty and obtain good jobs. There are many examples in my husband's administration," the first lady noted.

Mrs. Bush acknowledged that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had set back the agenda between Mexico and the United States, but insisted that Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration."

The first lady said she felt "a special bond with Mexico" and recalled the couple had spent their honeymoon in Mexico City and the Caribbean resort of Cozumel. The first lady is expected to focus on childhood poverty as she participates in this summit.

Americans are pretty much the entire problem, between the incredible greed and the unwillingness to defend our homeland with force.

Agnes, how old of a guy/girl are you?

If you're not a young guy, I guess you just take it by what you see going on.

Fewer and fewer young adults are using their degrees. There are too many graduates and too few jobs. Meanwhile, H1Bs have taken many of the tech jobs, while other visa workers have taken others. The remaining jobs are not enough to compensate for the amount of highly specialized and skilled workers.

Illegal Aliens have contributed to wage reduction and have taken over the few labor intensive industries that haven't been a victim of de-industrialization via "Free Trade".

Thus, this leaves few options: 1) Self Employed, 2) Government Jobs, 3) Low brow Service Jobs

There is a very complex situation going on with regard to illegal immigrants. TONS of them are here, sending money home to Mexico. If that money were to end suddenly, do you truly think we could handle the influx of illegal immigrants trying to cross over?

If that money were to end suddenly, the influx would flow the other way.

We could handle that.

There's nothing new under the sun...

Nor in this administration. This is a problem that has been discussed since the first refugees and illegals started showing up on the shores of this country. Just go back and check out your history.

Well Kaylar, I'm not going to burn in hell for speaking the truth, now am I?

If I own a business and need unskilled labor and I have two people applying for work and one will work of one dollar and the other for three dollars, guess which one I will hire?

You got it in one - the cheap labor.

The problem with a TIPS program is that it is too reminiscent of communism. Furthermore, when official documents have identified Christians, Constitutionalists, and Defenders of the second amenment as terrorists, this has the ability to be abused.

If the administration would just come out and say that we do not believe in global government, TIPS will not be abused, but will be used in a reasonable manner. If they will say that Christians are not terrorists, and if they will stop leaving our borders wide-open, perhaps people would take it more seriously.

What is the CIA hiding? Why is everything "confidential"? Something is funny here.

I have seen it where a manager also speaks Spanish and speaks mainly in Spanish, except when addressing customers. Thank God Chick-fil-A doesn't hire illegals. At least they have America's best interests at heart, are closed on Sunday's, pass out Veggie Tales books and toys in the kids meals, and give back to the community through college scholarships and the like.

And what happens when there are no longer enough people making sufficient wages to buy the products being manufactured?

I'm flagging you here, rather than posting this on the Dose.

I don't like the sound of this. The pre-9/11 deal was based on some sort of "normlization" for the 3.7 million (then) Mexican Illegals.

"Normalization" is doublespeak for Amnesty.

"What I do not here in here statement is strong serious objection to abortion."

True. I was very disappointed at that remark as well.

I truly think that what's happening in the USA is slo-mo genocide : Import Third Worlders, many of whom come from countries where antiAmericanism is rife. This not only reduces Americans to poverty and misery, when the illegals are hired for lower wages, it helps "dilute" national feeling, making it easier to subsume a nation into a Global Government, OWG, a Global Plantation, call it what you will. And this slo-mo destruction of the American working and middle class is both caused by and excused by the crassest class hatred : "Americans are too proud and lazy to do certain jobs (the jobs they were doing prior to,say, 1992 or so.)" This is code for "They're all a buncha rednecktrailertrashxenophobic neanderthal Archie Bunker types.".

I heard Tancredo on O'Reilly tonight. Impressive!

I wouldn't worry about this very non-specific statement by a very nice, polite, non-political LADY.

"Why are there so many Mexicans (percentage-wise) shopping in Wal-Mart, while other places have no where the same proportion shopping in their stores?"

Well, I think a case could be made that everybody pretty much shops at Walmart, therefore in areas where there are a lot of Mexicans living, there are bound to be a lot of them shopping in Walmart.

No, I said, percentage-wise. I can go into Target or Kroger and hardly see any Mexicans.

Not sure what it means but I'm going to wait until I actually hear something concrete from the President. A lot of what is said is speculation and media-induced fodder.

Those who hire illegals should have their businesses and their personal assets seized and face serious jail time.
