Laura Bush confident in Mexico-U.S. immigration agreement

EFE - 9/26/2002

U.S. First Lady Laura Bush said she was convinced an immigration agreement could be reached between Mexico and the United States, because their leaders want it.

Mrs. Bush, who participated in the 11th Conference of the Wives of Heads of State and Government in Mexico City on Wednesday, said, "I do see a solution to this problem."

In statements to the Mexican press made in Washington and published Wednesday in Reforma daily, Laura Bush explained she and her husband had lived in Texas for many years and have a special sensitivity for the problems of the U.S. Hispanic community.

"There are so many stories about immigrants and the children of immigrants in the United States. Our whole country is made up of immigrants who were able to overcome poverty and obtain good jobs. There are many examples in my husband's administration," the first lady noted.

Mrs. Bush acknowledged that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had set back the agenda between Mexico and the United States, but insisted that Presidents Bush and Fox "are going to meet again to try to revitalize and refocus the issue of immigration."

The first lady said she felt "a special bond with Mexico" and recalled the couple had spent their honeymoon in Mexico City and the Caribbean resort of Cozumel. The first lady is expected to focus on childhood poverty as she participates in this summit.

Yep--and like the new income statistics that were in the news the other day; stating that "even more Americans are living at or under the poverty level". Not one word of the ones who comprise those numbers and the fact that they may not be here legally. I resent the exploitation of our system of freedoms that they are able to use (in combination with the left) to gain protection (amnesty) and to bilk the welfare system and health care industy. It's just not right. I would think our veterans and seniors would be a priority, if there is a need for assistance.
I'm not for big social services, but do recognise that some of our veterans have gotten short-changed.

Well, looks like I'm going to have to call the "TIPS Hotline" on you,so agents from the Office of Reich Security can come by and pick up up for violations of the "Patriots Act".

That would make about as much sense as anything else I've heard lately. The danger that I represent, as a middle-aged, gainfully-employed, and highly-taxed citizen surely outweighs any danger posed by millions of illegal aliens bringing in everything from new strains of TB to 'dirty bombs' ... Hell, maybe I should just turn myself in.

You better watch that free speech. Don't you know that when Homeland Security goes into effect, such talk will not be tolerated, for you'll be labeled the "terrorist" that you are. In the new "Patriot Act" America, first amendment rights are so passe.

"She answered in a neutral and non-controversial way so as not to create a political problem."

Now I have to disagree with that. She repeated the same old PC line of 'we're a nation of immigrants' and told of their struggle, etc., etc.,.

She could have simply said it was a large problem and that we were working on it. In more stilted language of course. But what she said was the old PC line. Sorry.

Now she has looked more ladylike, but I have not been that impressed with her. Of course, most anyone would have looked good after the last eight years. But her suggestion not to watch TV on 9/11 did not please me. Her 'tolerance' messages after 9/11 did not please me.

"A lot of the illegals in my 'hood double dip. They get paid cash under the table from which they pay no taxes or SS. (so, $10/hr is really $10/hr!) Then, they also get welfare/foodstamps/WIC. If they were just getting paid lower wages but paid taxes and weren't eligible to get handouts I'd agree."

That is probably 90% of the illegals.

For those who think they are just minimum wage or under-minimum wage workers - they should ask themselves how they have enough money, on these supposed salaries, to send back to Mexico enough money to constitute 1/3 of their national economy. This figure was given by a very friendly to Mexico speaker on a Dallas station (before I disconnected my TV).

Anyone in this nation making $10.00 and hour, taking care of all his own and his families financial responsibilities (taxes, food, insurance, etc.) does not, can not have enough money left over to send back to anywhere.

"You and I can sit in our comfortable apartments or homes and make that statement - try telling that to the farmer who needs cheap labor to bring in his crops or the clothes manufacture in LA or ..."

I can say to that farmer, your food is not that cheap anyway - at least not to me. And I can say to that clothes manufacture - your clothes are not that cheap either - not to me. But who was doing these jobs before they came - someone was. Where are those people!!

I can also say to the American people. You WILL pay for these cheap goods (that aren't cheap). You will pay dearly. You may think it is cheap at the checkout - but the government presents the bill in the form of income tax, property tax, state income tax, sales tax, etc. You will also pay with the destruction of this country.

I personally would rather pay a little more for my produce (I don't think it is necessary, but I would) and be sure that an American is getting ajob and I am not having to support an illegal alien that cares nothing for this country. As for as agricultural workers, as in field work, I am not opposed to a temporary worker program. And PLEASE DO NOT CALL IT A GUEST WORKER. That is so ridiculous. But they must come, sans family, and return when the work is done. Also, if cheap human labor is not available, I believe our American ingenuity will invent many more mechanical answers to the problems. But why should anyone invent a machine to harvest a crop when no one will buy it. They would rather hire an illegal and let the taxpayers foot part of his bill.

You're too kind. Naturally, I will pre-handcuff myself in anticipation of their arrival. Not to worry though, I've called someone to take care of my cats during my long stay at the re-education camp.

"I think we should all boycott chicken. Entirely"

I have suggest that several times with no takers.

The only, absolute only power we have left is our purchasing power and it is dwindling. Anyone who thinks our vote matters is just delusional. But we might could make it count and we might could preserve some of our purchasing power.

If everyone who opposed illegal immigration would just not buy chicken for a month and be very vocal why, I think someone would notice. NOw it might take more than 1 month to have any effect - but it would work.

You are correct. I realize the best thing for me to do is just to acquiesce, and accept that citizenship and access to tax dollars is available to anyone from anywhere whether they abide by the law or not. I feel so much better now.

"not having illegal immigrant labor which can be paid sub-minimum wages."

I think I am correct if I say 99.8% of all illegals make minimum wage or more - not sub-minimum wage.

All immigration needs to be halted except in dire cases of family needs. Stop all until we can clean this country out, then decide if we need more. IF we don't need more, don't let them in. IF we need more in a specialized field, just bring them in on a temporary basis, with a time limit until we can educate enough of our own to fill the need.

"I am sure you are right in that statement, however, the solution is not to allow more illegal immigration but to reduce the government redistibution of wealth to those in this country that have done nothing but leach off the producers. If we were to reduce or eliminate the handouts, I am sure there would be plenty of hungry American workers lined up to do these jobs."

I too agree. I think welfare should be phased out - as in eliminated.

But keep in mind, even low-earning Americans would have to pay taxes whereas these illegals don't - for the most part. The employer would have to match SS taxes - which they don't.

If the truth were known, these illegals are probably making more than a large number of very hardworking Americans today. If those same Americans did not have to pay their own way, they would not be earning quite such law wages, overall.

To commemorate my freedom from any emotional or 'patriot' attachments to the former US of A, I will also begin to do all my ATM transactions in Espanol, and I will now gladly give my 50% taxes to support the New World Order.

"Bush won't be our leader beyond 04. His pro mexican invasion, anti border control stance will get enough of the GOP base to go fishing on election day that the Dems will win."

I wish Tancredo would run. I don't think he could win, but his campaign would certainly bring a lot of attention to the problem. As I have said before - a third party doesn't have to be elected to win.
