National GOP Likely To Donate $1 Million To $2 Million To Simon
Simon's Funding Lagging

POSTED: 1:04 p.m. PDT September 25, 2002

National Republicans will be funneling some $1 million to $2 million to Bill Simon's campaign for governor, with the exact sum to be determined within days, Republican National Committee Chairman Marc Racicot said Wednesday.

Bill Simon

"You'll find us as aggressively invested in California as any state in the nation," Racicot said in an interview after a speech at the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace.

"Obviously for us to make a significant contribution in concert with the (Republican Governors Association) reveals our belief that we can be successful here," he said.

Asked for details on the total commitment that could be expected from the RNC and Governors Association, Racicot said, "I'd probably say $1 (million) to $2 million." He said the final decision would be made by Monday.

The amount is lower than figures Simon officials discussed earlier in the campaign and would buy around a week of air time for commercials.

Simon, a Los Angeles investor and political novice, lags behind Democratic Gov. Gray Davis in funding and recently loaned his campaign $4 million. As of the last reporting period in July, he had $5 million in the bank compared with $31 million for Davis.

Bill Jones blasts Davis
Republican calls for investigation into fund raising.
By Margaret Talev and Gary Delsohn
The Sacramento Bee

(Published Thursday, September 26, 2002, 5:41 AM)

SACRAMENTO -- Secretary of State Bill Jones on Wednesday accused Gov. Davis of "blatant and aggressive abuse of public office" and asked the federal government to investigate his fund-raising for bribery and racketeering.

"The governor's standard refrain is that campaign contributions do not affect his policy decisions," Jones wrote in his complaint to U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, a fellow Republican. "All evidence points precisely to the contrary."

Democrats and legal experts dismissed Jones' corruption complaint, which comes six weeks before the general election with Davis continuing to lead Republican challenger Bill Simon in polls.

"A criminal investigation a month and a half before the election is a tough sell to law enforcement officials, even if it's valid," said William Portanova, a Sacramento attorney and former assistant U.S. Attorney.

Davis campaign spokesman Roger Salazar said Jones was "essentially trying to get himself back in the good graces of the Bush administration after endorsing the president's rival."

Simon got a boost from Washington on Wednesday, learning that the Republican National Committee was sending $1 million to $2 million for his fight against Davis. Jones, whose term expires at the end of the year, wanted to run against Davis this year but was crushed in a three-way Republican primary in March.

Jones' trouble in the primary was attributed in part to his decision to back Arizona Sen. John McCain for president in 2000, which cost him the support of the Bush administration.

Jones presented no new instances of alleged impropriety. Instead, he referred to newspaper articles quoting individuals seeking policy changes who said they were either pressured for contributions by the governor and his staff, or not taken seriously because they hadn't contributed enough.

The Department of Justice did not comment on the complaint.

Don Heller, a Sacramento attorney who has defended officials in corruption cases, said the timing of Jones' complaint makes it suspect.

"I don't care for Davis' fund-raising efforts. But just the fact that fund raising and contributions are made by people with matters pending doesn't in and of itself prove a criminal act."

Ah yes.. I recognize this. We must only support the PURE, The TRUE, The REAL BELIEVERS.. no one else can qualify.

Who would qualify under your definition? This is the reason that Republicans have problems waging the battle against the ultra-left liberals. Too many place lofty goals that must be satisfied NOW! or the politican is worthless.

Liberals never give up. They will accept small gains and small advances, setbacks if necessary but they never forget the way to win is to keep advancing the ball. Unlike some who never cannot understand that our freedom is worth putting up a fight even if the people going to battle are not perfect beings.

George Skelton, columnist, Los Angeles Times

The most biased Democrat reporter in the state. Bad news. There to protect Davis.

Regarding all the other threads ... the GOP hasn't snubbed Simon. The $10 million was thrown out way back when not by Bush or Simon or anyone connected, but probably the media. Bush came out for two major fundraisers and Simon raked in several million dollars. So this coming $1-2 million is ON TOP OF the millions Bush has already raised for Simon.

This is the media trying to hurt Simon, nothing more, nothing less. THey are trying to disenchant the Republican base. They don't want us voting.

Let's not give them what they want. We need to be out EN MASSE.
