Streisand to Headline Benefit for Democrats

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Barbra Streisand is emerging from self-imposed retirement as an entertainer to help out her old pals in the Democratic Party.

Two years after bidding farewell to her career as a public performer Streisand will sing nine songs at an upcoming Hollywood benefit for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, organizers said on Tuesday.

The 60-year-old entertainer, a long-time democrat, will headline the concert event Sept. 29 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, sharing the bill with Barry Manilow and comedian Steve Harvey, among others.

Streisand helped generate more than $5 million for the Democratic Party with an appearance at a star-studded concert in Los Angeles in August 2000 immediately following then-Vice President Al Gore ( news - web sites)'s nomination for president.

The next month, Streisand gave four final concerts -- two in Los Angeles and two in New York City -- billed as her farewell to her career as a public performer.

But she was coaxed back into the limelight to raise money for Democrats seeking to regain a majority from Republicans in this year's mid-term elections for the U.S. House of Representatives.

"Barbra's passionate belief in the importance of the Democratic Party's regaining control of the House ... is so deep that she has decided to sing three times as many songs as was originally planned," said David Foster, producer of the upcoming event. One number will be a "political parody that will raise a few eyebrows," he said.

Her personal publicist, Dick Guttman, said Streisand initially had planned to sing only three songs.

Streisand also sang at President Clinton ( news - web sites)'s first inaugural ball in January 1993 and a 1996 political benefit that raised $4 million for his reelection campaign.

In addition, she staged the 1986 "One Voice" concert at her Malibu estate that raised several million dollars for political candidates she supported.

With hits such as "People," "The Way We Were" and "Evergreen," Streisand has more than 40 gold-certified albums in a career spanning 40 years.

Streisand AND Manilow on the same stage?

Christ on a crutch, that's some serious nose action.

The show should be called "Three Tenors and Two Honkers"

Notice the list of "stars".

I bet some of them vote GOP and just agree to do this to make sure they keep getting work.

It's like the blacklist in reverse, only socialists are welcome.

We need a new McCarthy to put these unAmerican fellow travelers on notice.

Patriotism is in, and hippies suck.

From DRUDGE:

XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX THU SEPT 26, 2002 14:09:27 ET XXXXX

STREISAND MEMO TO GEPHARDT: 'TAKE THE OFFENSE!'

Barbra Streisand has reminded Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt in a blistering memo: "Sadam Hussein did not bomb the World Trade Center."

The Streisand memo, released by adviser Margery Tabankin, warns Democrats to "get off the defensive and go on the offensive."

The singeractressdirectorproducer took time out from rehearsals for a performance she's giving on Sunday for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to remind Gephardt [spelled "Gebhardt" in a faxed memo obtained by DRUDGE] not to "ignore the obvious influence on the Bush Administration of such special interests as the oil industry, the chemical companies, the logging industry... just to name a few."

Streisand notes: "Many of these industries, run by big Republican donors and insiders, clearly have much to gain if we go to war against Iraq."

Streisand urges the Democrats to "publicly convey this message to the American people."

While there are serious problems with Iraq, Barbra feels that we can't let this issue become a distraction from the country's domestic problems and the President's inability to fully dismantle the al Qaeda [spelled "Al Queda" in the fax] network.

Afterall, Saddam [spelled Sadam in the fax] "Hussein did not bomb the World Trade Center."

Feel free to call Barbra or me at 310-395-3599 if you would like to discuss this further, Tabankin offers to Gephardt.

Capitol Hill's top reporter, Ed Henry at ROLL CALL, later confirmed Streisand penned the "confidential memo" urging Gephardt to take the offense against Bush.

Tabankin tells Henry she sent the memo after she had a phone conversation with Streisand. "We had just watched Tom Daschle's speech," said Tabankin. "We were both very emotional."

Developing...

I have printed it up and decided not to watch any movie with any of these actors in it again.

I've been boycotting Julia Roberts, the Baldwins, Ben Affleck, Streisand, Ted Danson and his silly wife, the Sheens and Rob Reiner for as long as they've been making thier idiotic political views public. But a few of the names on the list are a surprise--James Gandolfini, for example. I've only been hanging on to HBO because of The Sopranos, but I will cancel it tomorrow, along with my other movie package, Starz. And the people at DirecTV will know why. With the money I save each month, I will buy more books like Slander and Breakdown.
