BACKSTORY: The Art of Big Business by Democrats
WASHINGTON DISPATCH ^ | Feb 5, 2002 | Ron Rizzo

Posted on 09/24/2002 12:07:10 PM PDT by Liz

There is an accepted perception or cliché that Big Business is a Republican dragon and saving the singed, exploited masses is the sworn duty of the Democratic shining knight.

Big Business is Republican, Big Government is Democratic. Never are the roles reversed. Further, Democratic politicians, writers, and scholars who lean left, characterize business as the global-warming fire-breather placing into the atmosphere deadly molecules, particulate, and beef methane.

The Democratic exercise is to find a space between corporations and consumers. This stance libels corporations, regulates them, drive up prices and controls the masses justifiably enraged about the performance of their DVD players. And if the masses are too stupid to know they are being tricked, the Democrats will tell them they have no power to resist hamburger joints.

Such is the accepted paradigm. Republican businessmen who have neither the time nor the inclination to read the dictionary for words like “paradigm” and “metaphor,” just send money to the Democratic knights from time to time in the form of political contributions or court settlements, and always, in unfair taxes. We learned recently that one percent of taxpayers (taxpayers are a minority of a third of the US population itself) provide 36 percent of all government revenues. Where is the Republican Party screaming about equality, that all should pay for government services equally?

Never do Republicans undertake a role reversal. Republicans dislike Big Government as much as Democrats hate Big Business.

Enron may be a Republican corporation. Though Bill Clinton was more or less a paid lobbyist for the giant firm, intervening on the doomed India power plant project several times in exchange for a $100,000 contribution. “Secret meetings” between Enron executives and Vice President Cheney sticks to the GOP like epoxy.

Global Crossing is another “Republican enterprise” according to the Chairman of the Democratic Party who defies disclosure in an obscene—nearly impossible—profit from GCL stock. Terry McAuliffe, says GCL Chairman Gary Winnick is a Republican. Terry says it, the leftist media believe it, that settles it. Global will remain Republican in the eyes of the New York Times, the Associated Press, CBS, NBC, ABC, you get the picture.

However, a tiny pulling back of the sheets of history discloses some conflicting evidence. Experience teaches that when a belief is made public, a belief supporting an underlying denial, another reality may be most likely. Bill Clinton’s denials come to mind as do OJ Simpson’s and Usama bin Laden’s. Arafat’s peace proclamations cover his real intentions.

Turns out, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, the organization that publishes all soft money political contributions, Global Crossing Ltd. paid the Democratic Party 56% of its political budget in the last election cycle. GCL paid the Democratic Party $350,000 in the month of January alone (2002), perhaps enough to buy off a Senate investigation, maintaining the focus on Enron.

But, it doesn’t stop there. Yes, McAuliffe can point out that GCL’s largest donation to a single politician went to Arizona Republican Senator John McCain. McAuliffe might fail to mention a New Mexico Democratic Senator received $2.5 million from GCL in a manner that technically defeats the campaign finance disclosure rules. Specifically, GCL paid Democratic Sen. Jess Bingaman’s wife. This is no ordinary Democratic Senator’s, pant-suit wife. Anne Bingaman was Assistant Attorney General under Janet Reno and head of the Anti-Trust Division. Her specialty is international monopolies, to which Global Crossing aspired in undersea cable.

There are no smoking guns on Enron, but here are two ignored by the Senate, McAuliffe and Bingaman. And at least one of these individuals, McAuliffe, is to be investigated by the public interest bulldog Judicial Watch. As with Enron, Judicial Watch is filing Freedom of Information Act requests with various government agencies regarding Global Crossing. A rushed $400-million dollar Clinton defense contract was awarded GCL, then immediately cancelled by the Bush Administration upon discovering irregularities in the bidding process.

Judicial Watch is also considering shareholder suits. There are two separate class actions underway against GCL, one regarding the firm’s 1998 IPO and another filed late last week regarding accountability to investors.

It never ends. McAuliffe was a board member of Telergy, a communications company based in upstate New York, that is going through a Chapter 7 dissolution. Telergy was a private firm, so there are no SEC filings detailing McAuliffe’s involvement. Of course there are no SEC filings available on his involvement with GCL either.

Winnick donated $1 million to the Clinton Presidential Library after McAuliffe arranged a golf game between these two hackers. So, just on the tiny information available, it appears GCL provided the Democrats with $22.7 million; $18 million to McAuliffe, $1 million to Clinton (his library funds have already been used to purchase the Clinton winter home), $1.2 to the Democrats and $2.5 to the one individual who could have investigated GCL’s potential monopoly but did not. Bingaman received, according to the CRP, the largest check from a corporation to a lobbyist in 1999.

So, here’s GCL, a “Republican company” run by a man who gives millions on the table to Democrats. And he’s friends with Democratic criminals as we’ve reported such as Ivan Boesky, Michael Milken and Marc Rich. It would appear without further investigation GCL is not a “Republican company”--lo-and-behold--but a Democratic corporation holding certain values and practices projected by Democrats onto Republicans, most notably “pay offs.” Further, Winnick’s closely held Pacific Capital Group donated $250,000 to the Democratic National Committee and not a penny to the Republican National Committee. The conclusion can be nothing other than Global Crossing is a Democratic company, not Republican. It is therefore not subject to the same media and Senate scrutiny as Enron.

But what is a Democratic corporation? Some as we will see tomorrow, are environmental firms. How can a Democratic company hire a high profile government anti-trust lawyer to protect the firm’s monopoly? The questions are endless. But perhaps there’s a new fire breather, and a spectacularly deceptive one, Democratic Big Business.

Obviously there’s more of a raw power game between the parties than we observe on a daily basis.

Given the level of mischief, the level of expectation a Democrat holds for a corporation, it could be useful to avoid such organizations, as by definition they breed corruption and exploitation. No properly minded Democrat would find himself at the helm of The Beast. Yet, here is one corporation run by Democrats who behave entirely as they expect Republicans to behave. There could be no more Democratic corporations, surely. But there are, and tomorrow, we will list them and their contributions.

I believe the Telergy Connection is a key to bringing McAwful to Justice...I'll try to go back and find some stuff I read about it and post it here.

BARF ALERT - FROM DU 2/20/02

As Jennifer Palmieri, spokeswoman for Mr. McAuliffe has said, he "did not meet the business associates from Telergy or Global Crossing through political connections. In the case of Global Crossing, he met Gary Winnick through an investment banker, and he and the Telergy CEO were childhood friends."

She also said that Mr. McAuliffe "never contacted the government on behalf of these companies. That's the difference between his relations with those companies and the Bush administration, which gave Enron unparalleled access to the White House on energy and tax policy."

It should also be noted that so far, no state pension funds have been decimated by the bankruptcy of Global Crossing or Telergy. We know of no major deregulation bill passed specifically for these two defunct companies. Also, we have no letters written to the chief executive of the country lobbying him for specific legislation.

Furthermore, we have no proof as of yet that the Cabinet of Bill Clinton was over-loaded with lobbyists and executives from those two bankrupt companies. And we know of no tax cuts designed to pay off either of them, as was the case with Enron.

It's inevitable, IMHO...the only question now is whether or not he'll roll over on Der SchleekMeister.

The Germans coined the word. There's no literal translation in English, loosely stated, it means, "the malicious enjoyment of another's misfortune."

Kinda like when you're loving watching a guy like McAwful get his due, how the sights and sounds warm the cockles of your heart, like you just drank a satisfyingly potent hot toddy.

In FR terms, I like to think it means a satisfying "gotcha," we finally gotcha.

LOL...my heart cockles are definitely warmed as I witness the snowball of Justice rolling downhill, picking up speed, and anticipate the inevitable crash of this lowlife Clintonoid getting what's coming to him for attaching hisself unashamedly to the EX-Rapist-in-Chief's coattails!!

Let's keep pushin'...MUD
