He will go to live with his grandparents in Brooklyn, Mich., a tiny town of brick storefronts and clapboard houses a few hours west of Detroit. There, with no rent to worry about, he will look for work.

Brooklyn, Michigan. That's where the Michigan International Speedway is located. If you can't make money there, you might as well give it up. I once earned over $700 in less than an hour (and I made a lot more the rest of the day) at that Speedway. I won't go into details on how I did it but as I tell people, put me in a crowd of racing fans, add in LOTS of beer, and there is no way I can't make buku bucks. The only problem is that there are only a few races per year at that Speedway but still....

p.s. If you go to that Speedway (or any racing track) and see a guy walking around in a bathrobe and slippers, that's my friend Gene. After he split from his wife he has done nothing but travel from car race to car race all around the country in his RV. He is always well into the Cerveza and makes great barbeques for the folks. If you mention my name, you will probably earn yourself a steak.

p.s. And Gene ALWAYS wears a bathrobe and slippers, even when he is not at the races---He decided to totally relax forever.

It's now been two years since the technology sector began its long slide, triggering the worst economic slump to hit the Bay Area in memory.

Actually the tech sector began to crash back when Clinton/Gore DOJ went after Microsoft.
That's a lot longer than 2 years ago.

Thank God for the Exodus. Traffic is alot lighter. Though the stupid drivers are still here. I was in high tech (telecom) and now I am in low tech (HVAC) Being in sales I have skills which I can take anywhere. The dirty little secret is layoffs are part of a free economy. This is what makes America so great. The flexibility of the work force to adapt and survive. If we were a communistic society like the democrats want, we would still have trades like a blacksmith on every corner instead of Starbucks.

"Over the years, it started getting dirtier and stinkier."

Actually, if these folks are willing to travel to India, I'm sure they could find some IT work. I know of two large banks (Mellon and HSBC) that have sent IT work, and other lesser jobs, over to India because of the cheaper labor.

Speaking of dirty and stinky ;)...

How a state that elected Ronald Reagan, could become a liberal wasteland of Gray slime, is hard to grasp.

California is going to collapse. Next is San Diego. Businesses keep closing and people keep buying 500K+ homes that are worth half that.

"The quality of life in the Bay Area has gone."

But I bet it is starting to improve...

We have the highest unemployment in the country here in Washington, because of 9-11.

Southard says it was tough for him to leave California. In Indiana, he hates the hot weather and misses the Bay Area's tolerance, openness and liberal political climate. "I'm very homesick," he said. "It's great to reconnect to Indiana, but sometimes you feel like a Martian."

Good -- I wish more liberals would feel like Martians because of their stupid views!

Bryan Clouse, for his part, never grew fond of San Francisco. "Over the years, it started getting dirtier and stinkier. It wears on you," he said. "I can't think of anything I'll miss other than the people."

Clouse apparently can't make the connection that the city is getting dirtier and stinkier because of the people. Streets and buildings don't just clean themselves, moron.

"For Clouse, leaving is an act of desperation. To help finance his move, he is selling off his one treasure -- a library of thousands of science fiction and fantasy books. For a collection that took years to accumulate and cost him thousands of dollars, he expects to clear a few hundred bucks."

Too bad he didn't save that money that he blew on those books! Maybe then he could have stayed in granola land. I just hope he doesn't move to Texas.
