New Poll on New Jersey Senate Race

Sep 19, 2002 6:00 pm US/Eastern

(KYW)-(Philadelphia)-The latest exclusive Eyewitness News Survey USA Poll shows incumbent New Jersey Senator Robert Torricelli is trailing by double digits to challenger Douglas Forrester.

Our poll shows Republican Forrester leading Democrat Torricelli 52 percent to 38 percent.

Forrester is up four points from an identical poll one month ago. Torricelli is up one percentage point.

The margin of error is 3.8 percent.

Eyewitness News Anchor Larry Kane says this poll is significant. Forrester is up four points from the previous survey, Torricelli is up one, but more importantly, a trend has been established.

Five weeks ago, when the first surveys came out, political advisers on the Torricelli side discounted the survey as a fluke - a response to his ethics investigation in the senate.

Now, three surveys later, Forrester not only keeps, but increases, his lead.

There are seven weeks left to narrow what is becoming a wide gap between the candidates.

Here's that 52-38 poll you mentioned this morning. It was from KYW Radio in Philadelphia.

Coop posted this elsewhere. I think it should go here too :-)
From the 9/19 edition of Roll Call:
New Jersey

---------------------------------------------------

Torricelli's Words Used Against Him

The National Republican Senatorial Committee on Wednesday launched a hard-hitting ad featuring footage from the Sept. 12 debate between Sen.Robert Torricelli (D) and businessman Doug Forrester (R).

In the footage taken from the debate Torricelli asks: "Who do you believe? Who is telling you the truth on these issues?"

Following these remarks, there is audible laughter from the audience.

"Call Senator Torricelli: Tell him the truth matters," intones the ad's narrator.

- Chris Cillizza

Now THAT'S a good commercial! :-)

I agree.

I have high hopes for this one - cautious optimism is the best way to view it. I really really hope that we pick up this seat as well as Minn and South Dakota while holding on to all the others. That way we would not have to worry about Chafee bolting the party like Jeffords.

Holy sh##. This is unreal on a number of levels. First, teh widening gap which shows Torch blew it in the debates and with his adds. Next, a challenger is over 50%, and Toricelli is not even pulling 40% IN FREAKING NEW JERSEY!!!.

I think Forrester may have passed the test of people who wanted to see if they were comfortable enought with him to send Toricelli packing, as most Forrester votes will be anti-Toricelli. Forrester has not scared the RINO's and "moderates" in NJ, which is all he really had to do.

This is such good news, I'm a little skeptical.

I'll believe it when I see it, but good news nonetheless. He may have to hit Corzine up for a loan to pay all those crackheads in Camden and Newark to show up and vote several times.

I guess this is the phase of the process where the axe is hitting the heartwood of the tree, and chunks the size of telephone books are flying after each blow. The woodsman is working up a good sweat. The tree begins to lean, just a little.
