It is the Congressman's responsibility to check with the contractor to make sure all workers are documented, particularly when he is making such a stink about this issue. If he did not, he was quite foolish.

I believe in LEGAL immigration, and all landscape companies and the roofing contractor we used had to guarantee in writing that only legal labor would be used.

This is not a hard thing to do.

It is the contractor's responsibility to not hire illeglas, for it is against the law.

It is not the Congressman's responsibility, or anyone's responsibility to check with the contractor. That is a personal choice. If the contractor were a legitimate licensed bussiness, he would not have illegals, just like he stated in the article.

"It is the Congressman's responsibility to check with the contractor to make sure all workers are documented, particularly when he is making such a stink about this issue. ..."

They would have said the same thing that they said after the work was done: No Illegal Aliens here, nope, none.

Should he then have proceeded with the work?

Actually, it would have been illegal for him to ask the contractor the question in the first place. Should he have broke the law and asked, anyway?

"I believe in LEGAL immigration, and all landscape companies and the roofing contractor we used had to guarantee in writing that only legal labor would be used."

Now putting it in writing would be easy, but actually proving responsibility in the event they are not would be another story.

How do you ascertain someone is legal?

Was the work being done by someone of Mexican decent? Not to be argumentative, but that piece of paper might make you feel better, but it solves nothing. Are you going to sue if you find out otherwise? How are you going to find out otherwise? Just curious.

At least you went farther than most people do today.

Exactly. It's not a violation of the rights to ASK, is it?

Last month, after the Post wrote about a young illegal immigrant's struggle to pay for college, Tancredo reported the teen and his family to the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Good for him!

Even if the workers were in the country illegally, "what is my responsibility at this point in time

If a U.S. senator does not know the answer to that question, he should STEP DOWN IMMEDIATELY. That's nothing but cover and now he is as guilty of parsing are making excuses as anyone else.

If this is "the best we've got," God help us all.

Now Miss Marple, do you check the immigration status of every employee at every grocery store and restaurant you frequent? It shouldn't be a complete pain in the ass to be a congressman.

Hey clueless, he said he asked the contractor and the contractor gave his assurance the workers were legal. Thats all that he's required to do, and in fact, if he tried to do background checks, the Rats would be all over him for racist acts and abuse of power.

Companies and contractors would never lie about the legal status of their employees just to get your business, now would they? No, because we all know that business owners are just sweet little angels who couldn't lie even if their lives depended on it. Right?

So the next time I'm planning to hire a contractor, I'll ask him to show me all of the hiring documentation for every employee on his company's payroll so that I can have an document expert go over all of the documents to verify their legality and authenticity.

And I am sure that you check the employment records of your local grocery store, gas station, bank, newspaper, radio station, garbage collection, television etc, yada yada ad nauseum. You really do, don't you, I do.
