Yes, there was a great deal of resentment in L.A. about things such as prices and how the customers were treated. I remember some years earlier going with an acquaintance to a liqour store in South Central to cash a check. I was stunned by what was being charged for diapers and groceries. (There were no other markets nearby.)

There were "no other markets nearby" because few people are willing to put up with the risk of running a store in South Central. The prices are high because of high rates of shoplifting and robbery, and to compensate for the personal risk that the shop-owner and employees have to take.

If the price of diapers are "high", then local residents have a simple solution: have somebody with a van either bring people to the nearest WalMart to shop. Alternately, drive to a cheap store outside South Central, load up on diapers, formula, whatever is "high priced", bring it home to South Central, and let the people on the block know they can come to your apartment between 7pm and 8pm on Mondays (or whatever) and buy staples from you for cheaper than the corner store.

But be prepared to be robbed or burglarized as your reward for your "community service".

So what, exactly, does the color of a man's skin tell you. About any given individual? Nothing.

Thomas Sowell came out with a wonderful book a few years back, "Knowledge and Decisions".

He noted that obtaining knowledge is not free. You have to expend energy, suffer a cost, or suffer a risk in order to gain a lot of knowledge about the personality, character, and trustworthiness of a particular individual.

Most people have no choice but to rely on the statistical correlations they have observed in life, of what is likely to be associated with observable characteristics of people.

A given pit bull might have a sweet disposition. You still do not approach it and give it a pet unless you are sure it's safe. Elderly Asian women are statistically unlikely to mug me, so I am unworried by them. Young black males with a sullen demeanor and dressed like urban thugs might be choirboys contemplating the Gospel, but I will still be wary of them.

Activists like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson intone that racism equals "prejudice plus power,"

Since those two have both they are legitimate racists and should be tagged as such.

I notice that despite being one of the oldest population groups in the nation, Blacks are never classified as "nativists"--even when they are. The Left truly now considers melanin the measure of "otherness."

Booker T. Washington ("uncle tom" that he was) had a stock speech he often gave entitled "Put Down Your Bucket Where You Are." He told established white businessmen to hire native, familiar Blacks rather than alien foreigners. Now those native Blacks are the Ultimate Foreigners, championed by the Left over every other group (no matter how culturally new or unfamiliar) while conservatives find themselves doing the opposite. I can't imagine what he would have thought of this situation.

Drudge had a headline regarding a Black versus Mexican riot. What is rarely reported is the fact that the two groups cannot stand each other. There was and is a veritable war going on between black and Mexican gangs in South Los Angeles. This struggle for taxpayer funds may break out in open Social War with many casualties and this fact may save us.
