PRESS RELEASE
Homestead Land and Water Alliance will be hosting the kick-off rally for the Sawgrass Rebellion in Tracy on September 29, 2002 in the Commuter Parking Lot between I-205 and the West Valley Mall between 3 and 5 PM.
The Sawgrass Rebellion is a convoy crossing 23 states, raising funds to help people in Florida and the Klamath Basin. Both areas have been devastated. The Klamath area had water withheld from farmers in the name of saving a fish--the National Academy of Science said the action was unnecessary. The Florida area has been flooded repeatedly since the Army Corps of Engineers was told by Congress in 1987 to construct canals and levees to protect the 25,000 people living in the area known as the 8.5 Square Mile Area. The Army Corps of Engineers received funding at the same time.
Several guest speakers will be on hand; Congressman Pombo, Leo Bergeron of the CA Grange, Joanne Shaw of Freedom 21, Irene Sundberg and several others. The Tracy Community Band will play for us. It will be a fun and informative meeting. There will be an auction/fundraiser of symbolic shovels, buckets and any antiques we may have acquired.
Local people may get involved by donating items suitable for sale for the fund raiser. We will be sending symbolic ziploc bags of dirt back to Florida with the convoy. The people in Florida can build a levee with dirt from all over the United States. Your name and city should be printed on the ziploc. Bring your ziploc to the rally.
Contact Homestead Land and Water Alliance at (209) 836-4046 (Betty), (209) 835-7974 (Sharon) or e-mail thru our website at homesteadlwa.com for more details.
We will be joined by people from the press, including The Tracy Press, TriValley Herald, The Record, KSFO, and Kat Country will try to be there.
A PRESS TABLE located near the entrance will issue you a press badge when you check in near the gate.
