PRESS RELEASE
Homestead Land and Water Alliance will be hosting the kick-off rally for the Sawgrass Rebellion in Tracy on September 29, 2002 in the Commuter Parking Lot between I-205 and the West Valley Mall between 3 and 5 PM.
The Sawgrass Rebellion is a convoy crossing 23 states, raising funds to help people in Florida and the Klamath Basin. Both areas have been devastated. The Klamath area had water withheld from farmers in the name of saving a fish--the National Academy of Science said the action was unnecessary. The Florida area has been flooded repeatedly since the Army Corps of Engineers was told by Congress in 1987 to construct canals and levees to protect the 25,000 people living in the area known as the 8.5 Square Mile Area. The Army Corps of Engineers received funding at the same time.
Several guest speakers will be on hand; Congressman Pombo, Leo Bergeron of the CA Grange, Joanne Shaw of Freedom 21, Irene Sundberg and several others. The Tracy Community Band will play for us. It will be a fun and informative meeting. There will be an auction/fundraiser of symbolic shovels, buckets and any antiques we may have acquired.
Local people may get involved by donating items suitable for sale for the fund raiser. We will be sending symbolic ziploc bags of dirt back to Florida with the convoy. The people in Florida can build a levee with dirt from all over the United States. Your name and city should be printed on the ziploc. Bring your ziploc to the rally.
Contact Homestead Land and Water Alliance at (209) 836-4046 (Betty), (209) 835-7974 (Sharon) or e-mail thru our website at homesteadlwa.com for more details.
We will be joined by people from the press, including The Tracy Press, TriValley Herald, The Record, KSFO, and Kat Country will try to be there.
A PRESS TABLE located near the entrance will issue you a press badge when you check in near the gate.
In addition to making a Sawgrass Rebellion Stamp, he's coming up with ideas about a stamp for the movement in general. Any ideas, submissions or graphics for either will be appreciated.
Receiving that call from Gene the other day made my week, as he's a major VIP on this forum and for me personally. Every time I get together with this guy we have a great time and accomplish something.
I can't believe all the talent I'm seeing, and how people are taking it upon themselves to step up to the plate and create major movement on this. Nearly every single person I've pinged to this post is doing something essential to make this a success. Writing, organizing, marketing, creating products, leading, spending money and time etc. etc.
Maybe I sound corny, but I'm truly amazed at what's going on here. God bless you all.
Gene I'll get you that 4x3 image as soon as I get some time to take a crap (haven't had time for that either). After I take my crap, I'll work on it. I'm shooting for early next week.
Most excellent news! Yes the Homestead event is scheduled for the 19th. Shall I add you to my "FReepers who are coming" ping/update list?
Pastor Mallory has been abused by our local mini-Tyrants for years, but he's not backing down despite their Chicago mob tactics.
My list of FReepers coming to this is getting quite large RC, when am I adding you? :) Whatever obsticle is keeping you from attending I promise I'll do everything I can to remove it, down to providing transportation.
Please do. Thanks.
Yeah , Gene is a good man . Looking forward to learning a great deal along with meeting some tremendous people .
You other 3 .. Clear some time for this ! Taking notes Bump !
This thing is taking on a life of it's own. I truly believe this can change the direction of our nation if we get behind it. We can really do some education out there.
I want people to bring ziplocs of dirt labeled with where the dirt came from. We will send the bags to Florida to build a symbolic levee with dirt from all over the USA like we did water to the Klamath. Come to Tracy if you can and bring your contribution to the Sawgrass levee.
Re the dirt... Helluva nice thought and I would love to contribute but there is a problem with the idea. One should be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN not to have living Phytophthora ramorum algae (sudden oak death syndrome) or any other living pest species (including weed seed) that is exotic to the Everglades in the dirt. I don't know if microwaving it would sterilize the spores but you really don't want to be blamed for bringing that problem to Florida, much less the Everglades. If a problem ever developed (and you can be sure that they will find one and if they don't plant one), it would be used against you FOREVER.
Frankly, I don't think it's a responsible idea. Could you please tell me who is coordinating it and I will tell them the same thing.
Re Tracy, I plan to be there.
I am sending a big hunk of cloth for signatures (paper rips and munches up) of supporters. That will help in the symbolism department.
Give me some ideas--I know there is something out there that would really give this convoy a special signature! Think hard and post your ideas. I need help here! We can change the nation with this movement if we can engage the public somehow.
