3 more West Nile Virus deaths in IL(21 total) 18 new cases(399) total

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Three Chicago-area deaths from West Nile disease were announced today by the Illinois Department of Public Health, bringing to 21 the number of Illinoisans who have died this year due to the mosquito-borne disease. In addition, the Department reported that the state's total number of laboratory positive human cases of West Nile illness now stands at 399 with the addition of 18 new cases.

IL has over 25% of the cases and 30% of total deaths nation wide..3 weeks ago there was only 22 cases, now 399. People are scratching their heads as to why IL has been so hard hit

Shouldn't this disease start diminishing now that fall is here and mosquitos are lessening?

Yes but I have a question..If animals can get it(lots of horses have died) why can't cattle..and if they have it wouldn't it be in the meat supply?

How about the people who died from the transplanted donated organs that were found to have the virus. I sure hope we're not looking at another aids type illness.
There might be a link though to terrorists. The guy Padilla was arrested at Chicago airport and, the three susspects from the FL investigation base on Ms. Stone's tip, had the license plate registered to someone in IL. Too many coincidences for my mind. Something definitely is afoot...

People are scratching their heads as to why IL has been so hard hit Illinois has not been agressive enough with spraying. As soon as more than one case of West Nile hit New York Governor Pataki had the City and State sprayed on certain nights of the week for a while. It controlled it for a while and now the bird population is back. We get a few cases of West Nile but not enough to really make the news. A new phobia of bug spray maybe?

Wow. Those numbers are horrific. I could understand Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, or Texas having high numbers, but Cook County Il?
I know statistically the number of people effected are relatively insignificant, but matched against all other states, that one county has the highest numbers.
All of the stooges are from Cook county.
Chaos Theorists, is this an example of 'clustering' or is something wrong with this picture?

They say, only the female mosquitos bite. According to the chart, they tend to like female humans more than males.
Wonder if therre's a reason why.

Mosquitos are lessening? this time of year? are you repeating a CDC press release ? where are they lessening? do you realize the probable highest concentration of mosquitos on the Earth is in the Tundra? It will be awhile before mosquitos lessen. You need a couple of heavy frosts first then they will reappear if there are several warm days. And by the way...after they lessen, they WILL BE BACK.

Good point, we were talking about this phenomenon today. Females, anecdotally, seem to be bitten much more than males. By the Way, a researcher at North Carolina State University has found a mosquito repellent stronger and more effective than DEET. It is an extract of tomato! ( NCSU, Raleigh,N.C. ; not that communist hotbed called UNC at Chapel Hill).

Chicago and environs are all low lying and were once very swampy. Now the wet areas have been drained and the water channeled and contained. One is never far from a retention pond, a slow moving river, or canal, all prime mosquito habitat. I suppose one would need to compare the methods of combating the little biters as well as population density to arrive at any conclusion regarding the question of whether this is just a reasonable cluster of disease occurence or the result of deliberate bioterror targeting. What about places like St. Louis, Memphis, or New Orleans?

They have other maps showing bird, mosquito and veterinary spread of WNV but this one looks like outbreaks are centered around large urban populations for the most part. Maybe that's just 'where the humans are' but LA for one seems an odd place.

That map is interactive on the website. State maps can be had by clicking on it. Also, the amount of red on the map doesn't mean a lot. One positive case in a county would result in the whole county being shown in red whereas a relatively small county like Cook co., IL which has had 309 cases makes no bigger impression on this map than if it had one.

OK, I got my answer on LA by clicking on the CA map. Just one confirmed human case there and in the whole state.

If this is an attempt at humor, it is very poor and brazenly critical of the wrong people. Lampoon Clinton's affirmative action stooges who sit on large salaries at the CDC and do nothing because they know nothing and where nepotism rules.
