A quote from the article concerning another stop:
'The man, according to Coronado, acknowledged that the money was his but said he did not know how it wound up in the air cleaner'
Too rich...hehe

The brake slam was his big mistake.
He should have been driving down the road with an internal chant 'I've got a secret, nah nah nah nah nah....'. Keeps you calm and a smile on your face. Or so I've heard.

Every pick-'em-up tailgate I ever sniffed smelled of Downey!
If they had a lick of sense, they would have loaded the truck with a case of detergent, a case of TP, a case of Downey, and other bulk household supplies. Then they could have been 'just coming from Price Club' with some bargains!
Sheeeeshh

The money, wrapped in fabric-softener sheets and then in plastic, was found soon after the driver of the sport utility vehicle slammed on his brakes when a patrol car passed him on Interstate 35 near the small town of Italy about 11 p.m. Thursday, investigators said. The sudden braking made passing officer Micheal Adams of Milford suspicious, so he radioed for nearby Italy police Sgt. Vance Griffin to look for a reason to stop the 1994 Blazer.
UM, so I guess if a small woodland creature runs in front of my car I'd best not hit my brakes if a cop is near.
ARE WE NOW GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT?

I don't think these guys quite have the concept of "money laundering".

While disregarding the origin, is it illegal to carry half a million in cash? How about $100.00? Or is it a $500.00 maximum? (/sarcasm)
I know the answer all to well, but the question is still valid. The origin, assumption and resoning behind carrying this amount has bolstered law enforcements ability to confiscate cash. Is this how we want to fight crime? Are we proud of this, or just happy to get the cash back into the counties coffiers?

This is a weird story.
...police dogs trained to sniff out illicit drug money...
Why does illicit drug $$$ smell different?

Just when did "possesion of money" become illegal?

We had a case like this just the other day. Lady was found with 175k in wheel wells of a brand new Ford truck. She said she had no idea how it got there.
She was allowed to sign over any rights to the money and the truck, and then just let go.
It sure seems like an easy way to bribe you way out of trouble.
