ASHEBORO -- The Board of Education took no action Thursday on a request by the local NAACP to suspend all cheerleading after the chapter president complained that all of the students on the middle and high schools squads are white.
Wesley Fennell, the president of the Asheboro/Randolph County branch of the NAACP, asked the board to suspend cheerleading activities until a better way of selecting team members could be developed and implemented.
"The current selection process has resulted in the total elimination of African American cheerleaders from the Asheboro City Schools system," Fennell said.
The city schools have cheerleaders for sports teams at Asheboro High, and South Asheboro and North Asheboro middle schools, Fennell said. Total African American student enrollment in the system is 14.6 percent. Another 21.9 percent are Hispanic.
The board did not discuss Fennell's concerns and gave no indication of how it might handle them. Superintendent Diane Frost instead provided a copy of a letter she sent to Fennell on Aug. 30.
"Our goal is to provide a wide array of extracurricular activities for our students," Frost's letter stated. "We hope students will choose to participate in at least one school activity every year, because there is a strong correlation between participation and high student achievement.
"We encourage any student who is interested in cheerleading, or any other activity, to pursue it. We strive to have an inclusive process, and certainly encourage participation from all groups of students."
Fennell said he has also learned that no African Americans participated in selecting cheerleaders. He said that the college cheerleaders brought in to help judge high school tryouts come from predominantly white universities. He said the system should also bring in cheerleaders from historically black colleges.
"This could have served as an opportunity to expose this school system to potential future minority teachers, and to expose Asheboro school students to positive role models of all races," Fennell said.
Fennell complained that the $18 fee charged for Asheboro High School's Blue Comet Cheerleading Clinic to be held later this month could exclude low-income students from participating in cheerleading. The principal told him that no student would be excluded because of an inability to pay the fee, but Fennell said he was concerned that students who couldn't afford it would be too embarrassed to admit it.
"This certainly seems to contradict the concept of an inclusive process," he said.
Exactly, it's best to be precise.
Maybe...
They already have; the result was, predictably, grade inflation.
The NAACP continues to perpetuate the welfare class by trying to extort on the behalf (and on the backs) of black people, while simultaneously telling them in so many words that there is no need to excel. And there isn't any need to excel as long as whitey is paying the ransom.
Low expectations breed low results.
It's really hard to participate when your pregnant or raising young kids, even with their grandmother.
Actually, whites don't generally "complain" about there being too many blacks in sports. It is a standard reply to the complaints by the NAACP that there is "underrepresentation" of minorities in a particular population. It is used only to point out the hypocracy of the position of the NAACP.
The word "overrepresent" is simply a tool of those seeking to use quotas instead of merit to be included in otherwise exclusive groups. If the NAACP really cared about the advancement of people of color, they would be spending their resources trying to improve the actual learning process for black students (and particularly poor ones), but instead, they indirectly encourage black youth to perform poorly since that is where the money's at.
Why try when you can acheive simply by being black and exploiting that fact. Why buy the cow when the milk can be had at whitey's expense. This is what the NAACP (and in essence, all quota-bots) promotes as it drives their bottom line in a positive direction.
Yet another generalization. To be sure, the teen pregnancy rate for black girls has been going down (thank God!).
I'm awake, but I think I need a nap. Because the dream world is the only place I'll ever get to meet those cheerleading-type women. :^)
White people don't know grammar.
Please remember this is not about people that may have been denied something because they are a minority. If that was the case there would already be ample evidence provided by the NAALCP. This is about no one creating a special opportunity. It's called affirmative action and they firmly believe they have a right to this type of affirmative action no matter what the facts are.
Trying to claim racism here? You've got to look at performance, drive, and desire. The groups you are discussing may not "want" to compete. (Don't they represent the inner-city product of teenage pregnacies and welfare themselves widely producing more teenage-age pregnacies and a give-it-to-me-I-deserve-it-you-white-racist hate-filled-republicans culture). That is a group who even critical of their own race who try for good grades!
Is that the culture who would tryout and compete for sports?
Rather, that culture seldom finishs regular school (as easy and not-productive as that is) ..... much less something requiring extra-curricular effort and dicipline.
Since 1960 Olympics .. there has not been one white sprinter win, place, or show .... and the last 4 Olympics, they haven't even made the finals.
That's not racism either. That's performance measured against an absolute criteria: best time wins.
