When I lived on a small lake here in Washingon, I was sitting out on the bluff one evening and a tiny baby skunk wandered close. It was by itself, don't know where mamam was. But when it discovered our presence it held up it's little tail, then promptly fell on its face! LOL It was too little to keep its balance and luckily had no scent. But it certainly had "skunk instinct."
