Brilliant Bush

WITH the cool precision of a surgeon, George Bush cut deep into the poison of Saddam Hussein’s deadly regime.

In one of the most powerful speeches the United Nations has witnessed, Bush laid bare the “grave and gathering danger” of the Iraqi dictator.

The President destroyed those critics who brand him a cowboy who shoots first and thinks later.

He brilliantly shifted the burden for the decision to take action against Iraq on to the UN.

The tactic, urged on him by Tony Blair, makes it very difficult for the world to do nothing.

Bush’s catalogue of Saddam’s crimes against humanity chilled the blood.

The TORTURE of his people by beating, burning, electric shock and rape.

His massive STOCKPILES of deadly chemical and biological weapons, some of which he has already used on his own citizens.

His continued QUEST for nuclear warheads and long-range missiles.

His SUPPORT for the terrorists behind 9/11 and the suicide bombers who attack Israel.

Bush laid it on the line. If we ignore this evidence, we gamble recklessly with millions of lives.

It was fighting talk, tempered by recognition that removing the threat of Saddam is a common challenge, not just a go-it-alone operation by America.

But Bush left no doubt that if the UN won’t act ... then America will.

We can choose between a world of fear or a world of progress, he said - but we can’t just stand by.

As Bush made clear, this is a defining moment for the UN. Unless it enforces its resolutions, it will become an irrelevance.

Likening Saddam to Hitler, Bush said world peace must never again be destroyed by one man.

To those who doubt Saddam’s threat, Bush said that on 9/11 we saw the intent of our enemies.

If Saddam provides them with nuclear weapons they will be on a short cut to their mad ambitions.

The world cannot afford to ignore Bush’s grim warning.

THE BBC should repeat the documentary on 9/11 it showed on Wednesday night.

It was the most powerful piece of television ever screened. Jules and Gedeon Naudet's film of the Duane Street firefighters was unspeakably moving.

This was history as it happened.

How can we ever forgive the evil-doers who perpetrated this act of terror?

The key to this speech, in my opinion, is that Bush based his call to action not on actions by Iraq against the U.S., which we can't yet objectively prove, but on Saddam's defiance and contempt for the U.N. He's telling them that Saddam is making them irrelevant (in just so many words).

So, if the U.N. doesn't act to enforce it's own resolutions, and it's irrelevant, then why should we pay attention to them? They want us to come to them and not act unilaterally? Fine, here we are. Act according to your own words, enforce your own resolutions, or else why should we pay attention to them?

Great to have that sniveling Kofi Annan speak before Bush as a contrast. This was the epitome of liberal vs conservatism. Liberals, aw give em a chance and he'll do the right thing enablement vs. Conservatism, it's time to get the job done, lead or get out of the way.

Brilliant is the right word.

• He gives the evidence that the Lefties have been tittering about for months.
• He "gives peace a chance" by laying out the path that Iraq can follow and not suffer consequences.
• He details the specific UN resolutions that Saddam is violating, showing the UN its decade-long impotence.
• He lists Saddams history of abuse, and sums it up by saying, "Saddam makes the case" for action himself.
• He gives the UN a chance to do something about it by asking them to act before we hgave to.
• He throws the UN a bone by rejoining UNESCO, showing good faith bargaining.
• He lets it be known that if Iraq doesn't act and the UN doesn't act, then we will act, out of necessity, and to save the innocent in the world, including Iraq.

I'm the first in line to shout when I think he's made a bad move, so I have to make sure I cheer loudly when he hits a home run like this one.

We all know that Iraq will deny the speech and refuse to act. We all know the UN will bluster and fail to take a principled stand. We all know that it will fall to us to do what is right... and we will... and we will win. I just hope that we put some very large exclamation marks in the Middle East's overhaul and the UN's newly reinforced irrelevance... like maybe relocating the UN building in Baghdad, where it will wither into oblivion.

Dasshole is the earthly embodiment of the heart of darkness. His intentions are purely evil. Now that might sound like hyperbole, but I don't think so. The look in his eyes, the venom of his lying tongue and his sweet-as-pie pretense...this guy is the devil's henchman.

I also make documentaries, because I believe that good art imitates life so, hey, why settle for an imitation?

That said, the Naudet brothers' film was made by the hand of God (as all docs are... but much more so). It is a miracle, all of it, different stories on so many levels, a masterpiece. It should win something huuuuuge... like a Pulitzer or something. Something HUGE.

It is, IMO, the best film ever made.
