This is really serious. This wasn't a random check. This was based on actual intelligence they received that a container ship fitting that description could be carrying a nuclear weapon or device into the US

Mine too!

Getting A NEST team there would indicate very suspicious cargo!

"Possibly, I doubt we will ever be told everything that is going on with it."

That could be a good thing however, at this point in time, this kind of evidence would be just what Dubya needs to throw in Kofi and the Dreamers' collective laps.

a missconception. there are several isotopes that escape even through lead. Radioactive material is hard to hide if you know what it is that you are looking for.

Which part? About the ship being searched or Scott Ritter's denials?

The reports on the ship are posted on a MSNBC report (link is up from this message)

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,62897,00.html

Like from Fox News on the ship.

As for Ritter, he is still being interviewed and is now explaining the money he was given to make his "movie".

He also just claimed that Bush has not laid out the evidence of weapons in Iraq but if he had Ritter would support a war against him. Seems to me Ritter could give a care less that Saddam has refused to follow a single UN resolution. That's not evidence to Ritter that Saddam might not be truthful....

I saw that ABC special last night re this very issue and certainly wish the press wouldn't detail just how vulnerable we are. Not wise at all.

Navy SEALs Inspecting Radioactive Ship Off New Jersey

Thursday, September 12, 2002

NEWARK, N.J. — Pentagon officials confirmed to Fox News Thursday that Navy SEALs had been, and were still, involved in the inspection of a possibly radioactive container ship off the coast of New Jersey.

The Liberian-flagged M/V Palermo Senator was ordered back to sea by the Coast Guard Wednesday after traces of radioactivity were found in the hold during a routine inspection at the Port of Newark.

The 708-foot freighter, owned by a German subsidiary of South Korea-based Hanjin shipping, was anchored in an exclusion zone six miles from shore.

U.S. Navy radiation specialists from the submarine base in Groton, Conn., were heading to the ship, the Pentagon sources said.

Sandra Carroll, a spokeswoman for the Newark FBI office, told the Associated Press that investigators from the U.S. Department of Energy were to conduct testing either on or near the ship Thursday.

The Palermo Senator had stopped in Singapore, Malaysia and Egypt, among other destinations, before docking at Newark on Tuesday.

Authorities would not say what the readings were, or whether they were at levels considered dangerous.

Inspectors had hoped to test the ship Wednesday, but high seas whipped by 55 mph winds made that impossible, Carroll said.

It was not immediately known what form the tests would take, or whether they would be carried out on board the ship or from vessels near it. Officials at the Energy Department did not immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Maybe we should fly all of the Rat Senators to this ship and drop them off without protection suits.

Then, maybe they will not want to get in the way anymore.

We can take the ship a couple of hundred miles and leave Da$$hole, Leaky Leahy, Boxer, Chi Fi, Killer Kennedy, the Torch, and other Rat senators on board to be human geiger counters to watch over the ship!

We can drop of Jennings, Rather and other left wing mediots to cover the story!

Wow, youi're right, I forgot about that. And certainly if they have the technology to build a bomb they also have the ability to hide it pretty durned good. Glad I'm not there.

Here is a story one hour old off Google News.....

FEDS Search Ship..

Sandra Carroll, a spokeswoman for the Newark FBI office, said investigators from the U.S. Department of Energy were to conduct testing either on or near the M/V Palermo Senator, a 708-foot container ship owned by a German subsidiary of South Korea-based Hanjin shipping and sailing under Liberian registry.

Could there be 'residue' from material which is no longer there?

Perhaps from a "dirty bomb", but not from an actual nuclear weapon. The emissions from a nuke are not high enough to make the surroundings radioactive after the nuke is gone. (A very primative nuke could be an exception.)

A "dirty bomb" is much cruder (and much less dangerous). Depending on how it was put together, it could be radioactive enough to contaminate its surroundings even after it was gone. It could also be crude enough to have left actual physical residue behind. These bombs do not make a big bang like a real nuke, but they do spread radiation and could cause a lot of panic.

FYI, everyone - the pucker factor just went off the scale. There is a NEST team that's been sent in - this is usually done when a suspected nuclear device is on the field of play...

Talked with family in MA this morning and it's extremely windy there - branches coming down, etc., but hope they are able to board ship as planned.
