That's the last thing it needs. It needs to have people who actually care about promoting conservatism and not lie and smear others who don't agree with them 100% of the time and who have the brains enough to recognize that having someone that is 95% is better than 0%. It needs people who don't make it their mission to make themselves and everyone else miserable. Hopefully in your local efforts you don't just sit around complaining and inventing reasons to be upset like you do here on FR.

Please read my Post #120 because it is meant for people like you. Funny that although you work at ACU, by backing a centrist 40% conservative like Sununu you are opposing your own Chairman, David Keane for whom my admiration has only increased with time, who had the moral vision to join every other conservative leader in the country in endorsing Bob Smith for Senate. Promoting conservatism is my mission in life. I have not lied or smeared anyone, but FR resident RINOs continue to lie about and smear me for my principled defense of conservative candidates like Bob Smith. I'm interested to know what offends you so much about conservatives like Bob Smith and me. Could it be that you are not conservative at all? That's my best guess given your support for centrists Sununu and Linder over Smith and Barr. I still can't believe you actually crowed about Barr's defeat! So much for your feigned allegience to the conservative cause.

I understand quite well why they endorsed Smith--he's the most proud and outspoken conservative voice in the Senate. But I doubt they're surprised or disappointed at the ACU that he lost. It's true that Smith has scored a bit better lately (he won't this year), but the whole point is not that Sununu is MORE conservative. It's that anyone in ACU's 90's is a good solid conservative. Anyone above 80 is pretty conservative, below 80 is a moderate-to-liberal RINO, and anyone below 60-65 is a liberal RINO.

You don't add to your credibility by calling an obviously conservative rep a "squishy RINO." The term loses meaning as you use it on anyone who disagrees with you on anything.

I'm not happy to see Smith lose. He's a great conservative hero. But I'm sorry, Sununu is not a RINO.

Bob Smith lost cause he acts like a fool. It`s that simple. One day he`s a Republican, then an Idependant, then back to the R`s.

Smith is a conservative everyday without fail. You can't say the same thing about the republican party.

Did I miss something? I thought Sununu was a conservative Republican that served under Reagan or elder Bush (?),

You're thinking of John's father. This is his Son that Won yesterday. HE is for Gun Control and more Gun laws. John Sununu is not outspoken, and does not have the backbone to stand against the "party" even if the Party's wrong.

and that Smith was the liberal Republican, who previously threatened to leave the Republican party like some other traitorous Vermonter who shall remain nameless.

you couldn't be more off base with this comment. Nothing Liberal About Smith. YES he did leave the party briefly as he was sickened by the Jelly spines that Refused to Vote on X-42. He was Very out spoken Condemning the party when it started to Sway LEFT. Back last Sept. He's the one that drew up the Gun Bill to arm the Pilots. Meanwhile. Sununu and Bass disagreed, and thought air Marshals were the way to go.

I'm not happy about losing smith one Bit.. But I must agree with all those that Blame the Massive exodus into the Great Live Free or die State. They move here to get away from the Socialist surrounding New England States, Only to vote for it here. Don't understand it.

I pray Smith run's for something in the future, its a Pitty NH and the Country Lost him.

Also for all of those that Keep telling me Smith supporting the Environmentalists, you speak a double standard when you Praise Sununu for being a Moderate and bringing more people to vote for him (Independents) then Turn around and Blast Smith for the same thing. People defend it for their guy but Blame the other guy for doing the same thing.

Lifetime ACU ratings: John Sununu: 94 Bob Smith: 92 Sununu may never be as outspoken as Smith, but you can just cut the crap about him being a squishy RINO, OK?

sununu is pro-illegal immigration and anti-gun. Keep your ratings.

Smith is a big goof that didn`t know how to get things done. Did he ever get a bill through that made an impack on our lives? His vote against ANWR lost me.

Smith won my North Country town with only 51% of the vote-- awful since his base is my area. I knew at that point that it was over-- well before any results were posted online or on WMUR-TV.

That stuff is right out of Smith`s campaign office. I never said her didn`t usally vote right{ ANWR, excepted}, but he rarely lead. When he left the party, I thought that he left over principal, but in the best Jumping Jeffers tradition, he came back when Lott gave him his senority.

SMITH RETURNS TO GOP

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -- Senator Bob Smith of New Hampshire today issued the following statement:

Good Morning, ladies and gentlemen.

First of all, I want to thank Senator Lott, several of my Republican colleagues, and Chairman Nicholson for being here this morning. Today, I am announcing my "return" to the Republican Party.

Let me begin with a humorous, yet ironic story. Last August, I went personally to the Tuftonboro Town Hall (my New Hampshire hometown) and filled out a "card" that expressed my "intent" to change my registration from Republican to "undeclared." I was informed that my request would be formally acted upon at the "next meeting of the Supervisors of the Checklist." The Town Clerk did not know the date of the next meeting, but I left assuming it would be done shortly.

Last week, I called one of the Supervisors to indicate my desire to "return" to the Republican Party. She informed me that I was still a Republican as there had not been a meeting since August, and that the next meeting would be Friday, October 29th when they had intended to act upon my initial request. At this point, I cancelled my original request. So, during all these weeks of controversy, I've actually been a Republican afterall! In spite of this, it was obviously my intention to become an Independent. I want to share briefly what has transpired since last summer.

Last July, I informed Senator Lott and my colleagues that I had decided to change my registration to Independent and that it was my intention to continue to caucus and conference with the Republicans if the members wanted me as long as no punitive or retaliatory action was taken against me.

Although some of my colleagues and party officials were justifiably angry, bitter, and frustrated, no disciplinary action was ever taken against me. I retained my Committee and Subcommittee Chairmanships -- including Ethics, Superfund, and Strategic Forces. Furthermore, after a few weeks, I was invited to attend Policy lunches and Conferences by the Leadership.

The non-partisan Congressional Quarterly magazine has rated me as the most loyal Republican vote in the Senate. Even though, for the past three months, I have worn the "Independent" label, I have consistently voted in accord with the GOP platform, conferenced with the GOP, answered whip calls, signed cloture petitions, and even cast the deciding vote in favor of the Republican Tax Cut Bill. I have also held fundraisers for Republican Senate colleagues and politicians in my home state..and attended many party functions.

My goal in public life is to make conservative policy the national policy of the United States. I want to unite those of us who believe in small government, low taxes, Second Amendment rights, a strong military, pro-life, local control of education, national sovereignty, and the restoration of Constitutional freedoms in our society. I believed that could best be done outside the Republican Party.

I was wrong.

For the past three months, most of my Republican Colleagues have urged me to return to the Party. In my travels, throughout the country, I have spoken with conservative leaders and grassroots activists in and out of the Republican Party. Indeed, many of them are not in politics, and I even spoke to some in the conservative media. (yes, there are a few of you!)

I have received thousands of calls, letters and emails from wonderful people who agree with me that we as conservative Americans need to unite and advance a strong forceful agenda, like we did in the Reagan landslide elections of 1980 and 84, and the Gingrich Contract with America in 1994.

However, while most people I talked to agreed that we need to unify to implement a strong conservative agenda, and they shared my frustration with the Republican Party, they pleaded with me to come back and fight the fight within the Party. People that I respect and trust told me -- in no uncertain terms -- that I had become a lightning rod for divisiveness, not the rallying and unifying factor that I had hoped to be in the Senate and among grassroots conservatives.

Two or three weeks ago, my wife Mary Jo and I came to the conclusion that they were right. It became obvious that the most effective way for me to have a conservative impact on public policy as a Senator was as a member of the Republican Party.

I simply could no longer ignore the message that I was hearing from friends, grassroots supporters, and conservative leaders. That message was that the Republican Party had the right platform, it had the largest organization of grassroots conservative activists, and it was the only party that could unify conservatives to chart the right course for America.

Thus, in private conversations with Senator Lott, several Republican colleagues, Chairman Nicholson, and New Hampshire Republican officials, over the past three weeks, I informed them of my intention to return to the Party. I was in the process of discussing a date to do so when the untimely passing of Senator John Chafee occurred.

Although I had made my intentions known to Senator Lott, Senator Chafee's death has forced the Republican Conference to make an immediate decision regarding chairmanship of the Environment and Public Works Committee. I am the next most senior Senator in-line for that Chairmanship. I felt that since I was coming back to the Party, the Conference should know that prior to making their decision.

To assume the Chairmanship would give me the opportunity to help accomplish what my goal has been all along -- to make conservative policy the national policy. I owe it to every conservative in America, and especially to the people of New Hampshire, to empower them in the United States Senate. It would be irresponsible for me to delay this announcement as it could potentially jeopardize the Chairmanship.

In conclusion, the past three months have given me a unique opportunity that few people have. As an Independent, I was able to step back and look inward at the Party...To reflect...To get a better perspective.

I believe that my leaving the Party to become an Independent helped to focus the national debate on the core values and principles of the Republican Party.

I am like the pioneer scout who has returned to the wagon train -- to report that the path I've explored is more dangerous. Like that scout, I am returning to the Republican Party with enthusiasm and vigor to re-energize and re-unify conservatives in this nation, and because I am optimistic that the Party is now poised to address those issues.

The conclusion to my scouting report is this: We must unite to make conservative policy national policy. And believe me, I speak from experience when I say that the best way to do that is through the Republican Party

Sink, I don't know what you are talking about, but I have been following JBS's ratings on Senators and Congressmen ever since I was in high school. There is nothing wrong with JBS and the New American is a great magazine.

I might have answered last night, Howlin but I fell asleep in front of the 'puter! I'm working way too much lately. Thankfully, this chair is comfortable.

Certain GOP strategists are convinced that eliminating "extremists" (which apparently is any candidate willing to forcefully stand up for our core values) from the party will bring in independent voters and assure victory. Are there enough of these mushy middle voters to replace the disaffected true believers who are staying home in increasing numbers? Maybe. But how does the GOP then hold on to them? By sliding farther to the middle, of course. Look closely at what "the middle" is nowadays. Looks a lot like socialism, eh?

PS: You can't be considered a Usual Suspect anymore. You've noticed that sometimes the emporer's wardrobe is lacking.
