My first experience flying was from Los Angeles to San Jose. We had just reached flying altitude, the stewardess was up pushing her cart down the isles serving beverages. All of a sudden we dropped thousands of feet. I looked out the window and saw a needle nose jet (looked like and f-16) just barely go over the top of us.
Needless to say I don't fly anymore.
Well, it happens. Of course, you don't have to fly to die in a transportation accident - highway deaths are a daily occurance around here. I passed a multi-car pileup on the way to work this morning. Don't know about fatalities, but it looked nasty.
We're inured to that, though. Unless they're monster chain reaction headline grabbers, highway fatalities are local "ho-hum" news. They still add up to 40-50 thousand deaths a year, one or two at a time.
