Texas Republican Party Platform Thread 11
Brown County GOP Website ^ | June, 2002 | Republican Party of Texas

Posted on 09/08/2002 4:17:18 AM PDT by Bigun

The Republican Party of Texas Platform has been MUCH in the news of late because it is a CONSERVATIVE document and, as such, VERY controversial. I thought it would be an instructive exercise, for those of us who wish to do so here, to go through it plank by plank and see where we stand on these issues. Pursuant to that, I will post ONE plank of the Platform, every few days and anyone who wishes to can state their views as to that particular part of the platform.

Today, under the sub-heading Preserving American Freedom we find the following plank:

Property Forfeiture - The Party supports legislation, which will strengthen the present restrictions on the use of civil forfeiture laws. We also support the enactment of laws which provide for the assessment of penalties and fines for the reimbursement of injured parties for attorney fees and costs accrued if the property is returned.

I have decided to score myself by assigning a score of between 0 and 10 points to each of the planks! 10 means I agree with EVERYTHING in it. 0 means I agree with NOTHING in it!.

ALL for it! 10 points bringing my running score to this point is 102 out of a possible 110.

Why is my GOP running from Abortion and Illegal Aliens?

Have we become so PC that rather than standing for right, we are working the crowd for votes????????

Where is Ronald Reagan's inspiration?

Deport every single illegal alien, and end abortion except for those very rare cases where the mothers life would be in grave danger if she carries the baby to term.

We are going through the Texas GOP platform ONE plank at a time on these threads but I assure you we WILL get to those issues.

They have NOT been ignored in any fashion!

On this forfeiture issue, they are being wishy-washy. Forfeiture is a clear violation of due process and it must go-no restrictions, limitations or massaging. The Government does not get to take property from people without a full fledged jury trial where the burden of proof is on the government. It is not OK to say to an owner of property that he has to prove his property innocent to get it back.

Anything less than that is still theft by the government and unacceptable in a free country.

I don't know what this is talking about. I'm aware of the criminal forfeiture laws, and they have been exceedingly abused by government.

But civil?

You are right!

What can I say?

My 10 for this just went to a 0. The people on this committee are not lawyers and I KNOW what they intended but that IS NOT what it says.

I would not have noticed either had you not brought it to my attention.

I'm still stuck at 69 out of 110. They're probably going to throw me out of the Party.

NOT bloody likely but could you PLEASE make it 68,... or 70 perhaps? You KNOW how some feel about THAT number!

Okay, I'll up it to 70. Some of the planks I've objected to had good intentions, but simply failed to deliver. The committee gets a bonus point for that.

I too was going to point out that Norm Mason and the Texas Christian Coalition might come looking for you if you persisted on being stuck at 69!

It concerned me at the time, but I figured I'd only be at that score for a day until we discussed the next plank. I wasn't peeking ahead to notice that bonehead planks were dead ahead. ;-)

I don't like the fact that I'm running last among those giving a running total. My guess is that I'm stuck with it for the duration.

All real Texans will be unable to follow this thread, or be anywhere else on FR, except during commercials. Cowboys vs Texans. Gotta go.

My dad played pro ball and I had season tickets for years. The day Adams fired "Bum" I quit watching pro football and as near as I can tell I haven't missed a thing.

As promised, I have done my homework....If any score is not 10, I have provided some explanation.

Thread 1: 10 points (no comment necessary)
Thread 2: 10 points (no comment necessary)
Thread 3: 9 points (agree in concept, but sun-setting provision also needed). Deduct one point for that omission
Thread 4: 8 points (agree in concept, but sun-setting provision needed, and I suspect more specifics needed). Deduct one point for sun-setting, and one point for specifics
Thread 5: 10 points (no comment necessary)
Thread 6: 5 points (I agree with the concept, but higher standards needed for high-ranking public officials. More specifics would be nice). Deduct four points for partial disagreement, and one point for lack of specifics
Thread 7: 7 points (I agree in concept, more detail needed as I see loopholes for abuse). Deduct three points for lack of specifics and potential for abuse.

Thread 8: 10 points (previous thread)
Thread 9: 9 points (previous thread)

PetroniDE: Running Total (78 / 90)

I see two new threads (Thread 10/11). I will get to those in a few minutes.

This one gets a 5 from me. O for the first sentence, and a 10 for the second. Cheers.

Thread 11: 7 points (concept is fine, but more specifics needed. This is a law that has received a lot of attention due to abuse, and the plan does not address those except in very general terms). Deduct one point for lack of specifics, and two points for no addressment of abuses.

Running Total: 95/110 0.863 ---- Now I am all caught up. Back to the football game.
